Local Electoral Register

The newspaper Connexion is reminding UK persons to register with their local Mairie by December 31st to vote in local and EU elections. Does this mean there maybe an election for mayor in my village and that i can vote in the election?

Regards

Glyn

If you are registered to vote in Parliamentary elections in the UK you are automatically registered to vote in the European elections as well. I have had a huge amount of help from my UK MEP, Sir Graham Watson. In contrast to that I have spoken to a French friend who was totally amazed that I had such help, as he has written to his French MEP twice and never had an acknowledgement.
Please be careful, as British ex-pats we benefit from EU regulations, which the French do not always understand and I cannot see many French MEP’s taking the same amount of trouble to take their own government to the Commission.
We cannot vote in both countries, so we need to make an informed decision. At the moment our Mayor is seeking advice from the Prefecture as to the possibility of voting only in Mayoral oelections here in France. I wish to vote in my commune, but recognise that in my particular circumstances as a British ex-pat, it is more in my interests to retain my European Parliamentary vote in the UK.

Bonjour,

Here is the link to the article mentioned by Glyn:

Inscrivez-vous, c'est important !

We get handbills for every quine and basta. (I dislike bingo very much at that)

we get a monthly newletter in our tidgy commune - 3 reminders so far!

I'll second Glyn there. I did mine a while ago but realise that unless people take a dekko on the notices at the mairie they will be likely not to know.

I believe there are a lot of EU people living in France who don't realise. Maybe Catharine this reminder should be put on the main page?

Thanks for the info David and Glyn. I have just moved to a small village and didnt realise I could register with the Mairie :)

Pleasure Glyn - it's nice to know an answer for once!

Thanks for that confirmation.

There will be in 2014 and yes you can if you register. Check at the mairie - where you will also be able to register.
