So my morning classes are still on but the other lycée I’m at is closing for safety after riots today, so an early Friday. I missed it all today as I don’t work Thursday, but it got s bit hairy.
I had been wondering if your schools were involved, Tory. Hope you can stay safe and continue getting paid.
Thank you for the link to the article, Toryroo. I saw a demo today in Narbonne and hadn’t understood what it was about until I read that. Thankfully we didn’t see any fires or other problems.
Take care of yourself. x
As I remember from my youth, peaceful demonstrations can turn nasty very quickly once a pack mentality forms. And not sure the French police are the best at diffusing this.
Just hope someone in the Government takes charge to manage this and listen to serious issues.
Thanks @toryroo for that. Madame was out this early PM and said she encountered a demonstration, she mentioned students protesting against class sizes of 38. ‘Tall people dressed in mostly black’ she said. The security guy at the next-door Carrefour Cite closed the shop.
I think it’s great that people post about both what is happening in their communities and highlight nationwide events as well, it really helps anchor our (my) understanding of what’s going on in the country we live in.
Again thanks, I’ll certainly ask about it with my class Francaise prof next Tuesday.
PS we and the mini Carrefour aren’t anywhere near a Lycée (well within a km I think).
Unfortunately, I can’t see a quick fix solution to secondary education problems like class sizes and teacher shortages.
OTOH French university students, who are also demonstrating, are probably unaware that their undergrad tuition fees are minuscule compared to those in England and Wales.
The country we live in has pretty good newspapers and broadcasts to assist - do you not avail of these?
Allegedly in support of the students behind them ![]()
No big issues in our smallish town lycée so far, but there is a ‘picket’ tomorrow. Our 16 yo son is sympathetic, but not radical or violent and we are happy he goes in to see what occurs.
1st post newbie here. Auvergne, Rhone Alpes (Geneva, Annecy area). Hello.
Irrelevant. It’s their perception and their reality.
Young people will be young people, it’s cool. Better than the repressed masses elsewhere. One of the things I like most about France is its revolutionary fervour. It keeps the politicians on their toes.
The World is in shit. Run by fascists, Chinese “communists”, oligarchs and billionaires. If you don’t think there!s revolution afoot, think again. Good luck to the young people calling this out. I’d be with the on the barricades, if I could have a comfy seat and be close to a loo.
I see that some students in a school in Mirepoix are protesting that they aren’t allowed to wear crop tops or ripped jeans!
Update for this morning. I didn’t sleep well, I woke at 3.30 and didn’t get back to sleep, I wonder if I was worrying subconsciously?
Police at Remy’s school and here. They are protesting out to he front but all is peaceful and they let us (teachers) in no problems, with the usual good mornings. There was a little fire cracker let off. Only 6 kids in class ![]()
we are in the computer room so they are playing English games!
It’s the same in the Collèges too. Everyday my son has problems with staff, lack of equipment, disrespectful parents and some things I cannot mention due to their nature, but when they went on strike recently, the teachers that is, the Academy just ignored them after failing promises of new cash injections for much needed things. Some of his colleagues go on the sick for months at a time with"anxiety", well they shouldn’t be in teaching if it affects them like that and other stupid reasons and they can get sick notes off the internet too! With the Lycées it’s the same internal problems gnawing away at their infrastructure but I cannot get their reasoning on destroying on what they already have only to end up with nothing. I also think there are a lot of lot of non pupils causing the main problems and destroying stuff like the Black Blocs in the previous riots who are people only out to cause trouble and have no interest in the real gripe the strike is about. MLP is right about making parents pay for damage but unfortunately if they are over 18 they are no longer children but adults. You would think that the majority of intelligent pupils in Lycées would consider the world stage at the moment and the hardships facing us all and not just them which is now going to put them back in their studies and cause possible family hardships too. Rant over about mindless acts of vandalism. One last thing, did you see the fire engine burned by the rioters? Well I just hope they and their families do not need the services of the brave pompiers and police and I see Darmanin now wants parents to pay for damages.
Yes those lovable little scamps ![]()
Looking at those images it’s just the same as the ones outside a migrant hotel in the UK… Masked thugs
Exactly with no interest in education or government, just out for making serious trouble. I heard that over 2000 arrests have been made so far and many more will follow
You read the Daily Mail
I think 'nuff said ![]()
I don’t read the daily mail I picked it up from Twitter.
The fact it’s in the mail, do you think the pictures are “fake news”. You sound like Trump..![]()
I saw the police lady being kicked down onto the pavement on the real French news on TF1 last night along with all the other info. DM is sensationalist reporting and anti EU so they never have a good thing to say. The police lady was quite a tiny woman and stood no choice with those black dressed and masked thugs chasing her down the street, think a colleague managed to drag her out of it.
Just shows what one can pick up from that sewer too
I didn’t look at or read the article, once I saw Daily Mail I closed it in shock.
Of course I wouldn’t condone any violence, but I’ll wait to read about it in source I trust, for example CNN, Politico or MS NOW ![]()
Yes absolute thugs, but because they are young it’s all ok, and they are just doing what young people do….
