Mac help, please!

I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8. I believe it needs some serious upgrading using a selection of lion/ leopard type felines.

My understanding of computers is neanderthal ( I still can’t work out the difference between a mega and a kilo bite ) but I am guessing that these and other problems (Iphoto library misplaced, computer memory fast disappearing etc ) might need some professional attention.

This has not been helped by our Bbox deciding to close down the other day though the internet now seems to be OK.

Is it possible for a third person to ’ get into ’ and check out the machine?

Prepared to pay, since our little business would suffer / crash if the computer decided to do the same.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks, John

Also recently added 4gb (maximum) ram to Catharine's machine from the original 2. You have to remove the old ones as there are only 2 slots. From Mr Memory

OK, John. That's good, it is very similar to our iMac. It is upgradeable.

So, my advice is that you start by getting an external disk, for example this one: link to Amazon.fr
When you attach it to the USB slot of the iMac, it should be automatically recognised by Time Machine. You let it do a complete backup, which will take looong, so let it run overnight.

Then you should upgrade the RAM Memory from 1Gb to 4GB. I have used www.crucial.com and their Scanning tool to determine what to get. Their prices are very reasonable. Changing the memory from 1GB to 2 x 2GB does require using a screwdriver (to open the machine), but it is fairly easy. Apple provides illustrated guidance in the manual.

Then you can proceed with the software upgrade as outlined in the Apple discussion thread linked above.

I wouldn't mind doing all this for you, but I think we live a bit too far from each other.

Thanks again for you attention, John

John, you described the operating system. What is the hardware, an iMac, a MacBook, from what year? The type of hardware can limit you upgrade path, if you have and old PowerPC based machine (G4, G5). Click the Apple icon (top left, normally) and select "About this Mac", then "More info". For my machine, I get this information:

(Serial number removed)

Time Machine is the backup application that comes with Mac OS X, and it is very easy to use.

Hello Krister . The Mac is as described in the original request - or do you need additional information?
And apart from Dr Who, I do not know what is a Time Machine.
Thanks, John

John, I assume you have quite a lot of personal stuff on the machine (documents, photos, etc) that you do not want disappearing. So in any case, you need a backup of that data. I propose you buy an external disk, for example a 500GB one can be found for about 60-70 euros. Then you let Time Machine do its work.

Exactly what kind of Mac do you have?

Thanks for your response. What makes me nervous is that it is suggested that I 'back up' all computer info on, I guess, my hard drive. What does this exactly mean and how do I do it? Thanks, John

Indeed, Mac OS X 10.5.8, Leopard, is not even supported anymore by Apple. Our iMac started off with that version, but has been upgraded regularly. I also increased the RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Runs very nicely now on Mountain Lion. latest version.

Please read this article for guidance on upgrade path:
