Seeing as were on a Plantagenet theme, it definitely was for Richard II.
Having just finished the previous shaving bowl, I’ve gone back to what I used to use in the UK (all those years ago) - Taylors of Old Bond St shaving cream, around €15 for 150g. Wanted to buy French, but balked at the price of comparable quality local stuff. It was shipped from within France, so no tariff and it arrived within a couple of days.
Best of all, I was reminded of just how good it is - thick creamy lather and a discreet scent that lasts all day.
I forgot to report back on my French shaving soap.
It lasted a couple of months, so I won’t be repeating the experience.
I tried Proraso, which was good but strongly scented. I’ve used Taylor’s before and liked it: nice woody scents.
I managed to order some of this, which I’d had before:
(A visitor brought it over.)
Your photo is not current I assume!
What do I have to do to be “admired” or “respected”?
Go into your profile, go to Preferences, scroll down to “Title” and choose your preferred epithet from the drop-down list.
When I get back to shaving my cheeks (for the ladies) and throat I will return to using Savon de Marseille, the same stuff I used for everything else. ![]()
Had to temporarily halt the shaving, far too close to the jugular for a gammie, trembling right hand. ![]()
No, should update it to one with the bags under eyes, but even in that one was still shaving my throat
Just checked the website out of curiosity and noticed they’re in Lanchester, not Durham City as I’d assumed. ‘The Lanchester, a gentleman’s shaving soap’ would have a fine retro ring.
Well, I’m quite disappointed. I’d rather thought that I would be appointed.
Sorry it seems to be self-service around here. ![]()
Apply for your Legion d’Honneur now…
L’Occitane do nice shaving soap.
Much as I love the ‘ritual’, I have found that using shaving soap and a brush really dries out my skin, to the point where my face feels sore. I tend to buy Gillette Sensitive Gel which works well with my Gillette Mach 3 razor . . . .
Surely you moisturise afterwards?
I’m lucky: I’ve always had oily skin.
Occitane was my cheap daily cologne for many years and Czech & Speke No.88 if going out in the evening. These days in rural France it’s Occitane for going out in the evening while '88 is far too powerful and exotic for around here (and far too expensive for a retired academic).
In my ideal world, C&S Neroli would be a lovely daytime cologne.
Have you ever tried shaving oil?
Also a decent German safety razor like a Merkur or a Mühle will cost a bit more, but should give a better shave and would definitely work out a lot cheaper than those expensive cartridges.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have a look at those on- line. ![]()
I used to collect cut-throat razors when I was a teen…always wanted to hone one up & have a go, but the thought of involuntarily ending my existence didn’t appeal.
I now content myself with an electric trimmer from Lidl, & the resultant stubbly mess.
Couldn’t resist posting this. Close up and personal. More like a surgical operation than haircut and beard shaving. That cut throat razor looked very sharp. And what fabulous hair.
I believe this might be in Turkey, not sure. Charity for the homeless. There are much bigger beards and top knots being cut back than this one.
He’s going to miss it in the winter though. ![]()
