Monthly mobile

A friend uses a pay-as-u-go mobile, topping up when needed. (seems expensive to me, Average 10€ per week) Are there any good deals to be had for monthly contracts?

I still use my UK mobile as I am in UK for work, far too often!

Thanks,

Helen

Marianne, could you tell me which company you are talking about here? Is it Virgin? The fact that you can call the US also is good for me. Thanks for the help. :)

Sorry Finn, there have been that many post's on this subject and unfortunately there are only so many hours in the day !!!

I will have a look at Prixtel as well as Leclerc.

Hi Marianne, 20E is too expensive for me, that's what i'm paying at the moment, i also don't need inclusive international calls as we have that on the internet phone, just the ability to make the odd one if required. I'm glad you haven't had any problems with Free as i know some people have. Maybe it's because you're paying 20E a month instead of 2E, who knows maybe you're just lucky!!

Hi Pam,

Both me and OH have been with Free for the last 3 months, their 19.99 Euro a month mobile contract, so far we had no issues, neither with reception nor connection. We live in the Hautes Pyrenees and I call my Mum, sister and daughter in Germany regularly every week and those calls can be anything between 30 and 90 (!!) minutes, and OH calls his Mum in the UK, we never had any problems. Those calls to landlines in Europe (and the US where OH’s sister lives!) are included in the contract so to us it seems a pretty good deal as we use it quite extensively, we also have unlimited data use within France and calls to landlines and mobiles within France are included too. But maybe we have just been lucky with reception/connection, no idea.

Hi Finn,

I don't know anything about prixtel but i'm sure someone has said in an earlier post that free has reception/connection problem's and i would need to be able to make the odd international call.

I have recently been told about the pay as you go deal from E'Leclerc which sounds really good and i wil be looking into it further.

You pay 14.99E for a sim card, which includes 10E of credit. The main bonus for those of us who don't use our phones a great amount is that you don't loose your credit, it lasts for 12 months. They work on the SFR system.

They charge you 1.50 E a month, which for me is cheap compared to the contract i have at the moment with Orange of 20E for 60 minutes & unlimited texts.

I heard a year or so ago, that in 2015 all european mobile operators will have to charge equivalent prices for roaming as for home calls. That should help. why it can't be now is beyond me. Wait, no it isn't. Phone prices are a big rip off.

I use AUCHAN supermarket, unlimited texts for 10€ a month. I have a free.fr landline and pay 3€ for all mobile calls in france. If I go to the UK I have to be careful and top up a lot beforehand as if you run out of credit there it can't be topped up. I got the phone for free with the contract.

I will be swapping to Free's mobile deals as soon as my phone contract is finished, I didn't realise their deals were so good for existing customers and I needed a new phone badly.

You can with any operator - it's the law ;-)

with free you can also transfer you own number

can definitely recommend Free mobile if you already use free for internet and phone its FREE for 60 text and 60 mins otherwise you can opt for unlimited calls/text/internet for 19.99 per month (15.99 if you are already with free) no fixed contract or notice.

My daughter had poor coverage with that. My son has the 2€ deal and half the time can't get him. I'm in the paris area.

Hi Valerie

As BB use their own APNs (Access Point Name) to route traffic through their servers in canada, it isn't so easy. I know free mobile offer that, as it is a 1E option to their all you can eat data and voice.

Leigh

I've not been able to work out a system whereby I can pick up my emails on my Blackberry. I have to Google translate all the site info pages and am trying desperately to avoid getting stuck with roaming charges etc. Anyone know of a simple way, pre-pay, pay as you go, uncle tom's cobbly, I can access emails so I don't miss clients? I'm with Orange at the mo for internet/landline but when I try to configure their (apparently gratuit) service, I get 'no mobile network'. Help?

Yes, the one James is talking about is the one I have my teenage son on - and it seems to work out fine

Yes, I was on Orange and just signed up for the 20€ Free package, both unlimited data. 3GB data then throttled in fact for the Free package.

Does anyone use smartphones with an unlimited data plan? Any ideas where the best cost plans for this type of plan are?

Oups, thanks for that Finn, I thought it was obvious to all that you need to tell them you want to keep your existing number but I should have pointed it out and as you say all you need is the rio number and they do the rest, between us we've changed 5 times with no hassles keeping our existing numbers ;-)

there's much cheaper - oh and i both have 2 hours and unlimited texts for 10€ a month with virgin (was 15€ a month with télé2 for 1 hour before and OH was 30€ for 2 hours with Orange then 20€ with télé2 now 10€ with virgin...!)

usually a couple of hours, OH had no interuption, my line was dead for 2 hours, when we changed from tele2 to virgin. 10€ a month now for 2 hours communication and free texts ;-)

You keep your existing phone number when you change companies, it's been like that in France for a number of years now ;-)

And yes, no one tells you about the better deals until you ask, that's France!
