Murphy’s Law

You still can, they just have to stay the night!

Lidl. For a fab white quaffer - by the gallon in my case - the South African Chardonnay Colombard. 1,99€. My budget is low but that is, in my book, virtually free!

Lidl also do other non-FR wines. Maybe Aldi, being brother of Lidl, do also - never looked.

I remember on a wine prog, a FR wine maker, after tasting a classy pinot noire [obviously NZ] saying “Yes. I know this wine. But I will never make one like this”. Dumbo. Sacrificing taste for A.C. authenticity.

There are many FR winemakers, fed up with the restrictions of the App Cont rules and regs, simply making their wines the way they want to, to taste fab, and A.C. get stuffed. Pays d’Oc a frequent eg of this. Lidl in UK do a Pays d’Oc Cab Sauv which is way above its ticket price of £4.99. A Sauv Bl, too.

As for the list - tri-llocks.

A burger made with quality beef, salad and a bun not made of polystyrene packing chips is not rubbish, or indeed unhealthy. A Wendy Burger is.

Charcuterie: I refer the Hon Ladies and Gentlemen to generations of Italians and Spaniards.

White rice/flour. I refer the Hon Ladies and Gentlemen to generations of Asians and French people collecting bread from the boulangerie daily.

Chips: A foodie mag in UK did a test. They weighed chips before and after frying ‘properly’ ie not languishing for ages in poor quality fat. The take-up of fat to the chips was insignificant. And who, like all these foods, has them every day?

Cheese: Cut out cheese? In FR? now there’s a novel idea…

Instant soups: My dear old mum was very grateful for these, with a crusty slice or two, when she couldn’t be faffed to cook a lunch. And who would be without several packet of Knorr ‘Jewish Penicillin’ in the cupboard?

Sodas: AKA Coke. I note that the 20/30-something generation of Spanish, M & F, drink Coke rather than any alcohol. Which is worse for your liver? Teeth - another matter.

Industrial fruit juices: I stick to the stuff made with grapes, wheat, rye, hops…

Burger as you describe tick.
Charcuterie tick.
White rice, for most people ok, flour, now thats interesting, traditionally yes but too many industrial GMO flours with “flour improvers” or profit improvers should we say.
Chips, yes cooked properly little oil but the oil isnt the problem. Potatoes spike insulin very high and too many portions too regularly and you build insulin restistance and the start of the obesity pathway.
Cheese no problem tick.
Fresh soups are instant but what is left in dehydrated flavour enhanced sweetened powder?
Sodas, massive sugar dose spiking insulin and creating greater hunger for yet more sugars. Or sugar free with artificial sweetner which indications are they damage the gut microbiome, how many and how often obviously playing a part.
Alcohol, your body stores carbohydrates and protein which can be turned into fat storage whilst the the liver sorts out the alcohol.
Fruit juices, again spiking the insulin in some cases but with the fibre stripped out very little value to the body. And what they use chemical wise to strip every last bit of juice or oil from the skins is what they also use at the dry cleaners, just not at the same time

Jane, do you have a ‘Noz’ nearby? I have found some good wines in there, several from the Stellenbosch region in South Africa. I’ve also found decent Chilean, NZ and some lighter Californian rosé. It’s a bit of a gamble when you go, sometimes lots of decent stuff, other times just rubbish. My most recent bargain was this Languedoc rosé for 20 cents!

Yes, we have had some success at Noz - and some failures. Trouble is we are boycotting Casino which is next door, so rarely go to that town now. But a good reminder to perhaps put it on our route map again.
