New online car registration procedure

The Quitus Fiscal is a French document. Why would you need it translated?

So one cannot hire a car in France and drive it to England? I suspect that the wording of the question and the answer may not have been so forthright.

Hi John,
hat has been my experience, the ANTS website does say that too.
As stella says though, somenone did mange to do this using the computers provided at the his prefecture and tha assistance of a member of staff. That may be a way arund this show-stopper.

Hire cars are treated differently. The information is correct.

Hi John. No I didn’t. The quitas fiscal was hand written by a representative at the Beaureau des Impôts. It’s a form they fill in, based on the information you provide.
The QF, the application for immatriculation and the Control Technique were created in French, the rest of the documentation (v5, certificate of conformity, bill of sale and my ID) were all in english. The prefecture simply scanned them in as they were.
Kind regards
Paul

If you can not access the ANTS site other people can log on for you. It may not be as convenient but you are not being prevented from registering your car.

I think that’s correct. I had a nightmare a few years ago where we broke down in our uk van whilst camping and it was scrapped in France. Luckily we had RAC cover so we were given a French registered van for our holiday however, we were not allowed to drive it to the UK. We had to drive to Le Havre ferry terminal, unpack the van and carry our kit (bikes, tents, climbing gear…the lot) onto the ferry as foot passengers then pick up a UK hire van in Portsmouth. Total nightmare!!

Many thanks Paul

Phew… I have found a local garagiste who will “do the necessary” online to change the CG for a French Regd car recently sold/bought…

Hopefully all will go well. I have stepped back, after giving them the list of documents required and the address of the garage… :relaxed:

Meanwhile I am still awaiting the outcome of a Document Request wending on its way through the ANTS since early January… :worried::zipper_mouth_face:

Even at the prefacture you need to be on the tax system or have carte vital otherwise it knows you are not french and doesn’t work. Some Belgium friends had same problem. They said its the computer programme and they will sort it out. When?

We had aphone call yesterday. 3 more bikes are done
This time it only took 2 weeks, maybe they are clearing the backlog, or just getting quicker? We gave up trying to do it ourselves and used a not-so-local motorcycle shop. Our local professionels refused to handle it

Easy to answer. It would enable that UK resident to ignore many motoring laws as the car could not be traced to the owner by the UK police. Speed cameras? no problem!
But your post seems to apply to a UK citizen who lives in France, as a UK resident would not be visiting the UK for short stays. Paul states “as a UK resident” rather than a visitor.

Hi Mark,

Sorry, just noticed your comment on this issue. The price included having the front taken apart to fit the lights as well . I had no time to source scrapyards for them so forked out a premium to get it all done before the insurance deadline for having no Carte Gris, which in the end turned out a waste of time as the Carte Gris became a fiasco that lasted two months.

James

Thanks for your reply, James. I always check eBay.fr first as most european suppliers are there. Headlights often involve the removal of the front bumper cover. It looks drastic but does not usually take very long.
The carte grise process for imports is currently taking about a month provided the correct documents are submitted.
Don’t be taken for a ride though! On another site which specialises in giving advice on importing UK cars one of the members was told by a company called Cartapac that the process was taking up to 6 months but it could be “fast tracked” for an additional fee of 45 euros. It can’t. Once an application is entered it is dealt with chronologically by computer & cannot be altered or messed with. They also sent this person a temporary carte grise with a validity of 4 months. Temporary certificates are valid for a month so I suspect a little use of “photoshop” may have been added!
It is worth noting that once you have received a temporary CG the proper one usually arrives in a couple of days by registered post so there is little need for a month’s validity, let alone four!

Hi Mark,

Thank you for that.

I did eventually get the Carte Grise and all in two weeks from the
acceptance of the correctly completed papers online.

I thought I had smugly missed the new online matriculation by a day but had
all my physical papers returned two weeks later with a note to fill them
out online!

My French neighbour was marvellous but she struggled to make sense of the
sequence of admission, especially as I was a non-resident and had to go
through her as I was not registered on any system. It took weeks.

However, she did help out her non-resident Dutch neighbour (who had been
struggling since Oct last year ) after me and completed all her application
in an afternoon with acknowledgement by 5pm. Three days later a message
from Ants requested a new CT for her friends car but at least proved it was
quickly processing the paperwork.

My experiences with the French is that there are no grey areas. It is all
black and white. Everything must have the i’s dotted and t’s crossed to
make it speed through and woe is you if not.

James

Kind Regards
Yours Sincerely
James Eyre

Hello Paul ,i seem to be travelling the same winding road that you have. I am trying to register my UK registered TVR here I know it is possible as I did it via the sub prefecture with another TVR . It’s thes online business that has got me confused .I am up to the bit where it says “Analyse par le service instructeur” and to be honest I can’t remember when that appeared but it was weeks rather than days .My question is whether or not all is lost and should I start the whole tedious rigmarole again or just sit and fume for a while .

Just sit and fume
That means someone is now looking at your case; you will likely get a response within the next 5-10 working days…

Hi
It’s quite a frustrating process and took almost 4 weeks for the system to change from “in process with and agent” to providing the approvals. Once it’s done, it all progresses quite quickly. I had the plates in the car and all insured on the new reg within a week of the online approval.
You just need to wait I’m afraid. If nothing after 4 weeks, give them a nudge via email. Good luck.

Thanks Paul,
And thank you for your original run down of the process which I found after wading through a lot of other stuff !
