Is it just Auchan, or is it just in the Midi, but you buy a pack of nuts and raisins of practically any variety, own brand or not, and well before the expriry date they are full of expired cr
eatures.
Why? Has this started happening worldwide since I've been living here?
Am i going to die if i eat them?
PS I'm sure it's Gordon Brown's fault but I can't work out how
agree with Allison - we've found them in sealed bags so we know where they were from - not always the same place. It comes down to storage before packaging and if there are little ones in there they are going to hatch at some point. I don't think they are harmful (think of our forefathers who used to sift maggots and the like from their flour and other provisions) but it's not a good look. Once you have them you should clean out everything in your cupboard as they hide in folds of packets. It takes time to get them all. And in answer to your second question - I've only found it a problem in France and only once experienced it in New Zealand (only in one packet of something from a Chinese importer/producer).
The problem with only buying what you need in this region is that often they only buy in some goods once a year (so it seems) and once it's gone from the shelf you don't see it again for another year.
Steve are you sure you didnt mix your nuts and raisins with your wallet !!! ;0)
I have had this from supermarket in the UK aswell although not here yet ...but your be glad to here they wont kill yer !!
I thought it was just me! Last year I bought a bag of powdered almonds to have a go at making macaroons and when I came to use them (they were unopened and placed in a sealed tupperware tub) the tub was crawling with white caterpillers, dead moths and silk. It made me feel sick, so I had a good clearout of all packet nuts and flour. I thought the eggs must have been in the nuts at point of packing, as how else would they have got in the container? However, surely this cannot be the case for every bag? I bought my products from lidl so blamed them for less than efficient cheap packaging and quality control methods. I have since found out that it is a general problem and not just lidl that is the issue. A friend locally produces her own dried fruit and nuts and told me to look out in mid August for small moths in the kitchen and that any storage container must be sterilised and dried before use. The moths look for damp corners and dark places to lay their eggs and the larvae can eat their way through plastic bags!
From now on I will only buy what I need when I need it to use immediately.
