Donald Trump says united Ireland would be a ‘great thing’ as he visits country - follow live - BBC News
United under whom?
No surprise really. Similar to his views on the Falklands.
And in direct opposition to his views on Venezuala, Canada, and Greenland. But consistency for him is caring about no-one equally.
Not that he wants to cause any trouble, whilst deliberately doing just that. Anyone would think he’s trying to test Burnham, see if he caves or stands up to him.
He obviously recognises that it’s time Eire became part of the UK. ![]()
I thought your thread title was very droll, I’m sure a certain rabbit would too.
Though he’s against unification at the moment…?
He just has to meddle, doesn’t he? Even when he’s playing with people’s lives.
The worst thing is that it could all be part of the Epstein distraction effort.
Burnham doesn’t want a referendum, ergo Trump does. It’s tediously predictable.
I have to confess that I stole it.
No, but it’s all over the place now. I was an early plagiarist.
Yes, Trump is just trying to cause trouble, as usual.
But, interestingly the Unionist parties (normally staunch Israel supporters) are pissed off with the the Israeli rightwing’s response to Ed’s announcement saying that NI (along with the Falklands) is evidence of British occupation. And they are right ![]()
A bunch of Scottish settlers displaced the indigenous Irish (to Hell or to Connaught) back in 1609. The ramifications, as we all know, are only calming down now. Thus, following the Israeli Right’s plan we can expect peace in the West Bank in approximately 2426. This is how stupid the anti two state solution, murdering bastards are ![]()
Watched the BBC1 17.35 news - showed the orange one stating ‘Ireland should be united etc, a great feather in everyones cap if it happens’ ..“It’s gonna happen eventually” - then a clear cut in the statement - a flash! - then continuing “The Uk would have something to say about it obviously, but I think it would be a great day”
The Guardian has “I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. The way I look at it, it’s going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now. The unification of Northern Ireland with the republic of Ireland would be “fantastic”, Trump said.”
The BBC seems to have cut the ‘may as well happen now’ part, unless the grauniad is making that part of the quote up.
Hey, MSM, who can you trust? The BBC has previously got into trouble with editing trump I recall !
Yeh, just like the Ukraine war over on day one of his second presidency. Ireland showed what it really thinks of him.
IF - and it’s a big if, you presume that reunification is inevitable at some point in the future then I agree, might as well just get on and do it.
But I’m not sure that it is inevitable, or a terribly good idea for that matter - there are many in the north who would not make good bedfellows with those in the south, not to mantion the difficulty for the south of absorbing the north economically. On a much larger scale granted, but it has not gone as well as hoped in Germany.
We threw away much more than most people realise with Brexit where Ireland was concerned - the beauty of the Belfast Agreement was that it allowed those who wanted a united Ireland to basically conduct their daily lives as though it were, while simultaneously allowing those who wanted the north to remain part of the United Kingdom to conduct their business as though the north and south were separate. We can’t easily put that djin back in the bottle.
I wonder if Trump feels the same way about Hawaii and Texas. ![]()
I thought Ireland already had its own Orangemen?
The Scottish originate from Ireland so they where only returning to where their ancestors came from.
Rodger … My understanding is that following the rebellions which ultimately led to the Flight of the Earls 1601 ,and the wars and destruction in their wake, the lands were captured by the English King … As was their manner he gave it in large tracts to his chosen backers who held estates in England and Scotland. His hencemen or Lords in England were Church of England, but tenants they had in the Scottish Borders were Low Church ..and a pain in the A . So they saw this as a win win …They got rid of these Dissenters from Scotland , gave them enhanced land opportunities in Ireland ..land which has been taken from the Papists So they bought themselves a Protestant Militia who would keep the Papists at bay. and were able to resettle the farms on the Scottish Borders with more docile Scots. The Ulster Scots were very independent minded and Free Thinkers ..They tolerated the yoke of the British Lords because it put them in a position higher up the food chain than the native Irish..,and provided they were getting perks … But they would have totally opposed the Tithes required by law to the CoE ..and they lead plenty of rebellions on their own ..The United Irishmen and 1798 was led by them …
The visit has been expertly chorographied by the Irish Civil service … No Street drives , no waving to adoring crowds . Phoenix Park blocked off to normal humans and only the necessary people there …There are now three major buildings almost within sight of each other .. Aras , US Residence and Farmleigh House …now owned by the Irish State and used occasionally for State functions .. Then from there into the Golf Course in Clare and from there tomorrow he will be broughttonShannon and out of our hair.
Regarding Reunification ..that was a solo riff .He was asked a simple non question by a reporter ..to which the known and standard answer is .“.that’s for the Irish people to decide ..” . ..But he has never used a simple answer when there is a hole to be dug … . Interestingly he tried..in his inept way to row back on it a few minutes later in the USA Residence . Basically he didn’t want controversy ..he wanted golf
