Our garden is not fenced and we live in the countryside so we often get all sorts of wildlife visiting. Yesterday we moved some black plastic and met this wee critter.

Western whip snake I think (yes, I had to google that).

I would say european whip snake, but I think the same thing. Common and harmless, unless you are a small mammal of course!

if it has round pupils it is a grass snake… generally considered harmless…
if it has slit pupils it is a viper/dangerous… be careful…
anyone going to get that close to check… 
We have a Western Whip Snake as our regular guest…
