I wanted to write a long email to The Oldie magazine but the email address they provide takes me to an Outlook page. It seems MS wants me to sign up for something which I don’t want to do so I copied the email address and pasted it into my normal Orange email.
But it won’t send because it just says that it is an invalid email address. Is there anyway round it without getting mixed up with MS?
I do have a gmail address too but I don’t to use that, it was only to accommodate one person, and in any case I am not sure I can change my email address in this Outlook format.
It might be worth typing the address into Orange email rather than using copy and paste as Microsoft may be including additional formatting characters. The address is editorial@theoldie.co.uk
I’ll try that Brian, thanks, but I did do that I think with the address I need for the purpose I want. I think the address you gave is for submitting articles etc but it might get passed to the right person.
I have joked that it is the place for me because it is obviously run by real old people who are easily confused like me. And this goes to prove it. I have no idea how or why it first began to arrive in my inbox but a previous attempt to pay for it only resulted in them doubling the free copy, thus since then it always arrives in twos.
I really like reading it, the articles are numerous and amusing but I would prefer a hard copy magazine, which I am happy to pay for, because reading it on the screen is not doing my hunched shoulders any good.
It worked ! Even though I thought I had tried that last night. The, as soon as I sent it I realised that it had gone from my automatic email address which was hacked sometime ago. It still works but sometimes, especially with people who do not check their spam boxes, it gets lost. So I sent it again with my new address so, like me, they will now get 2 identical emails.
On that point, my hacked address, how can I remove it from its automatic spot for sent messages? I don’t want to delete it as the majority of people I know use it to email me, it works perfectly for incoming emails.
I suspect what happened is that you clicked on a “mailto:” link - the behaviour then is to start whatever your PC thinks is the default application for sending mail.
On a M$ system that’s probably going to be Outlook unless you have changed it. Hence all the asking you to log in/sign up to Outlook.
It would also explain why Orange thought the address wasn’t valid as I suspect you copied/pasted the “mailto:” part of the text which isn’t part of the email address.
Of the top of my head I’m not sure if you can get it to open and fill in a message in a web based mail client such as Orange (mailto: links can contain a message subject and pre-filled in body, as well as recipient).
Yes, I think that is what I did. Any idea how to change the order of my 2 email addresses? In order to stop an email I send from the automatic first choice from dropping into someone’s spam box, I try to remember to change the outgoing address manually, but I don’t always remember. Makes no difference as long as the receiver does what I do myself, and checks their spam box several times a day, but many don’t and my messages then lie unopened.
I’m not an expert, but (as @billybutcher mentioned above) when you click on a certain type of link on a webpage, it uses whatever your computer’s default app is.
I think David’s request was how to change the default ‘send from’ address in Orange mail. I’d love to help but don’t use Orange mail so have nothing sensible to contribute.
You may be able to right-click on the address you want in your Mail settings and choose “set as default”.
Or hidden in the preferences there may be a way to do it. In Mac Mail you have a choice of either letting Mail choose the most relevant email address to send from (e.g. one you have used before when emailing a particular person) or specifying one address as the default.
He’s using Orange email - the web version I suspect as David doesn’t use a smartphone. Does anyone use Orange mail and is able to give some accurate, specific advice to David?
Excellent point, @billybutcher . I thought that David had two xxxx@Orange.fr accounts and wanted to know how to change the default ‘send’ address. Perhaps @David_Spardo could confirm?
Correct. Forget the gmail address never use it except for one person who is a numpty and says they can’t receive anything else.
So, forget that. I have had the same Orange address for many years until earlier this year it got hacked. Whoever did it let me know by putting a line through a few email address lines I had sent. No other problems so I continued to use it but then my friend Eddie said that I shouldn’t use it simply because others could get access to it.
But when I write an email, up above it shows my hacked address as the default sending one. If I click on a little down arrow my new address is revealed and I should click on that to make sure the hacked one isn’t used. But I don’t always remember, especially when there is something else distracting me such as happened yesterday with the Oldie emails.
Mostly it makes no difference but back in June I notified all our friends when Fran died and did not get a reply from just one. Couldn’t get her on the phone either (later found she had changed the number ) and went through a lot of trouble to get a message to her door in England, I thought she might be collapsed inside.
Finally, I discovered that she never checks her spam box and so did not get my emails which had ended up there because of the hacking.
In short. I have 2 Orange email addresses. The default one is the hacked one. The other one is the one I want to use. So I want to replace the hacked one as the default but without cancelling it as I do receive many emails addressed to it, presumably from people who check their spam boxes and therefore don’t notice.
Not necessarily. One Orange account will allow you to have several (alias) email addresses so you may be able to change the default sendfrom to one of the aliases.
