Painting

Top tip for repainting shutters [something most of us have to face periodically]: I tried rubbing down -too hard and not very effective. Burning off the old paint seemed a bit drastic. BUT - a 1" chisel at a shallow angle - about 30 degrees -removes the flaking paint without disturbing paint which still adheres well. Dab undercoat on to the bare wood, and there you are, ready to repaint! FOOTNOTE: never, never be tempted to paint gloss straight on to wood. I did, with some new shutters: it just meant I had to redo them after just 2 years instead of the usual 5 or 6.
