Can anyone give us advice? We are buying a property overseas and need to submit a police certificate to the local authorities confirming we don't have a criminal record (which we don't!). Has anyone experience of this or able to point us in the right direction? We live close to Angouleme, in the Charente
Hi Ben,
Hope you can help! I have had to move back to the Uk for a short time and wish to do supply teaching with a local agency. I therefore need the UK CRB check, plus a French police check for the two and a half years spent in France. Is the attestation mentioned by you the one I should complete? As we are not yet registered for tax or healthcare, I'm not sure that we will be on their system at all! Thanks.
Obviously an arch criminal Shirl! Did you once sneeze in a public place without being in possession of an approved tissue? ;-)
hope you're getting things sorted out a bit ;-)
of course not, Shirley, we're talking about a certificate needed for teaching etc, it's exactly the same in the UK ;-)
Yes, and you have to pay for it in the UK, I had to pay £10 but it's free in France
Click Ben's link to obtain an "attestation casier juridique" (level 3) - this lists only the most serious of criminal convictions and is the only level you can apply for yourself (levels 2 and 1 must be asked for by an accredited agency such as a University). If you also need to get a British certificate you need to visit : https://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/ , where you can apply for a basic disclosure form which lists any unspent convictions. If you are permanently based in France you cannot do this online, you need to order a paper request form by mail. You cannot ask for a higher level of disclosure (i.e your entire criminal record) as an individual, this again can only be done by an accredited agency.

And that it takes forever! The one I had done in France, so I could work in schools, was done in 2 minutes on the computer, the English CRB check took 3 months!!!!!!!!
Pop into the mairie, they will set you right!
Ben's said it. I've had to do this for teaching positions here and for the douanes to become a buraliste!
Vicki, if you are from the UK and a CRB record is also required, be aware of the fact that there is a High Court decision of the last few days that makes the inclusion of minor offences and police warnings something that should be discontinued. One of the complainants had warnings when he was about 11 years old, but never a criminal offence. The Home Office is going to appeal, but nonetheless the CRBs are wobbly at present and if one is required it may be a good moment rather than waiting for the possibility of an appeal overturning the present decision.
Ditto exactly what Ben said!
I believe you're looking for a "attestation casier juridique", the famous bulletin no.3 You can get that online via this link https://www.cjn.justice.gouv.fr/cjn/b3/eje20
In some countries they want also an equivalent of that document from your country of origin if you still have your original state membership since in that case the French one will only cover the time you've spent in France.
My main residence is in Magnac/Touvre, also close to Angouleme :-)
