Out of interest do other countries have the problem of legal requirements for two surnames, or is it just Spain.? The airlines will not accept passengers where the name is different.
In France you used to have to have your father’s name and that was that but the law has changed and you may now call yourself your father’s name and your mother’s name in the order you prefer, or just one or the other.

When I was called for a medical appointment in France, I always looked round for my mother, because I had almost forgotten my maiden name. It isn’t written in law though, is it?
The issue is that for the airlines the name on the passport has to match the legally required Spanish name, so the UK one has to be changed.
Yes, the law in France is basically ‘use the name you want’. I have an impossible name in French, my eldest daughter switched for my wife’s name, it makes her life easier and she can keep a low profile at uni. She did it at the age of 18, when Dupont-Moretti’s law about surnames was passed, so that would have been in 2022. It requires a declaration at the townhall.
