Problem with non-orange mobile calling 09 number

For about the last month I’ve had a problem phoning home on our 09 telephone number (Orange Livebox telephone by Internet VOIP) from my Leclerc (SFR) mobile.

There is a message which indicates that there is a technical problem. I thought the problem might go away on its own but it seems not. Now it seems that other people with non-Orange mobile phones also have the same problem. It works fine for my husband, who has an Orange contract mobile phone and we can make and receive other calls from the 09 number.

Has anyone any ideas about this before I ring the English tech helpline?

LOL

Strange, but very common with telephone companies. I wish I had a pound for every time BT told me (back in the day) that they had tested the line with which I had had problems & that it was working perfectly - and which, less than an hour later, started to work as it should!

How strange. I hadn't tested my mobile since the phone call from Orange and I have just done so and it works! Orange must have done something.

OK, that's weird as it has worked fine for around the last 5 years but suddenly started being a problem about a month ago.

I've just tried a test call to an Orange-based 09- number from my Leclerc Mobile phone and that works fine, so it's not a generic problem. In a way, that's good news, but it's also bad news 'coz it means that there's something a bit weird about the way your number has been set up.

Bouygues Telecom mobiles are generally independent of Orange, as they are a genuine mobile operator in their own right; Free probably piggy-back on someone else (perhaps Bouygues?) in the same way as Leclerc Mobile piggy-back on SFR.

I'll send you a friend request so that you we can try out a few things off-line.

Thanks Peter, we do have a separate landline number as well but I use that for my business. The 09 number is used for outgoing calls and for friends and family calling in.

Vanessa,

Do you only have an 09 ..... number? People I know who have Orange and a 09- number have kept their original landline number (0450 xxxxxx around here) as well. If you don't have anything else, you should perhaps see with Orange whether you can't have a local landline number instead. With the other ISPs, such as SFR, you can normally have your original geographically-based landline number as your VOIP number if that is your only line (which is my situation).

The guy tested the line, then used two other different mobiles from his colleagues one was with Free and the other was (something which sounded like BigTelecom) could have been BoyugesTelecom I suppose. They both worked - are they basically with the Orange network?

I then used my mobile to phone our 09 number with it pressed to the microphone of our landline phone so he could hear the error message. He was flummoxed! He's going to pass it on "up higher" and call me back on Friday, when they've had a chance to investigate it further.

I rang the helpline and they tested it all. It seems there is a problem - on their side. A technician will be ringing between 2 and 3pm this afternoon. I'll update this in case others have the same problem. I have seen postings about it on the Orange website forum too.
