Hi James

Any possibility of a dictionary of French acronyms?

Many of the posts contain numerous acronyms that mean nothing to me. It's almost like a code being used by 'The Knowing' to communicate secret stuff to each other via SFN!

Paul

Well as the expression goes (in general) John, sometimes you have to laugh or cry! . Me, I like the humourous interjection, that’s why I miss Brian, Doreen, Jane, the Davids, Peter and Vic’s constant ripostes, sorry to those I missed ff the list. I Miss you Vic!

Ooh I know what you mean a out the process Susan, I still get lost at end after ive reviewed to correct many typing errors, when i wNt to add the post, cos it says to go back to the discussion to then click on add at the bottom of screen, it takes me ages to go back! Good luck.

If the realities are so awful for some people it’s amazing that they are still here! I suppose I must have lived out of the UK for too long, I obviously don’t have the island mentality or whatever anymore. I just find it embarrassing when topics, eg about the technicalities of getting a French driving licence, turn into a tirade of cheap humour referring to the French as ‘them’. In my opinion that is rude and uncalled for. Individuals have problems, individuals have incidents with bad drivers and customer services, individuals get ripped off. These cases are a drop in the ocean are just as likely to happen in Germany, Holland, Italy, Switzerland or the UK. Personally I have found it depressing that a forum designed to support English speaking immigrants and visitors to France should attract so many people who like to demonstrate their perceived superiority through cheap humour. Sad and degrading? Yes. Funny? No.

John, just because some of us point out the realities of life in France, i.e. " Speak as we find" , as it relates to me, other expats and their own lives, me included, does not make us anti France or the french. There ARE cultural differences in many attitudes and systems here, which means there is a ‘them and us’ position, we learn it, accepth it, move back to uk, elsewhere or stay, but that doesnt make us anti-anything.

Re uour june July comment, I dont know when you came to France or if you are fluent in the language, which many are and many aren’t - but we dont have to be as “loved up” or defensive as you portray you are. We are just realistic, still patriotic to our own countries of birth and seek to achieve our own aims in our own ways where we can, so accept the comments as they come, like Doreen says ,there has been no open hostility to France and the French, just open realism!

I also would not state as you have “I know” what all people think, relative to acronyms or anything else. we all to “survive” i.e. Cope wherever we choose to live!

I like Neil’s reply, He summed it all up eautifully for me where SFN is concerned!

The real problem with my post was that it contains double negatives, always a mistake. I think that a human failing is that we are quick to jump to conclusions. On my last trip to the UK I was overcharged for motor oil in ASDA. I had to argue my case with the customer service desk people who were reluctant to walk to check the price, and special offer reduction stated in the aisle. Once they actually saw and acknowledged the mistake they refunded the money in silence. One small example but it coloured my opinion of supermarkets in the whole country!

Doesn't your friend have complementary insurance Doreen ?

Agree 100% with the disabled bit. The French are generally light years behind the UK from what i've seen. Many pavements around here are pretty bad and totally unusable by wheelchair users for example.

Agree Angela, the French system isn't what it was and EVERY Health Service in the world is short of funding but the World Health Organization doesn't quite agree with you..

I agree with the roads and trains but beg to differ on the NHS. The truth is that France can’t really afford their health service and have already started to make cuts. There is also a shortage of doctors, specialists snd nurses. Watch this space. Remember our NHS is a free service, no top up insurance required and it is forever improving

Sorry to have got the wrong end of the stick John. I suppose figures and stats can be used to prove and/or disprove points. I look at French unemployment trends and notice a steady increase in France and steady decrease in the UK (except for last month !). I look at the figures for Growth and see the UK at above 2% (the threshold apparently which will instigate unemployment to fall) and the French figure at below 1%. I look at the jobs available in the local Pole Emploi and don't se much available.

I have to admit i've never had a big problem with French After Sales Service either but a recent trip to the UK, my first visit for 15 years impressed on me just how GOOD the UK service is in comparison nowadays. Staff actually seemed pleased to serve me which was a pleasant change from the more 'don't really care' attitude creeping into French services.

Just my observations of course.

I think you might have to re-read my post Peter, the figures suggest that the French economy is no worse than the British and, in fact, both countries are doing well in difficult times. I personally have had no trouble with French customer or after sales service but I always wonder if that is due to the way I approach problems.

True enough John economically France seems to be miles behind the UK as they do with Customer and After Sales Service but in other ways France puts the UK to shame with things like the Health Service, roads, trains and the public services.

There was always that problem with the RAF in Germany. The British think that the acronym means the Air Force, the Germans a terrorist group.

I suggest you look a bit closer. It’s an observation, there is no need to be do aggressive. In my opinion, throughout July and August there have been too many anti France and the French posts, you might see them as necessary but I have found them demoralising. I suppose it could be a reaction to the ‘Survive France’ name but I’m sure that I’m not the only one who doesn’t agree that different is wrong, France is not living in the 21st Century and the French economy is struggling miles behind the UK.

SFN?! Unfortunately has connotations , could be a splinter group of the LePen rabble.
