Shocking waste when so many are struggling

That’s a lot of food in the bin that could benefit the poor, if it could be managed properly.

Not sure why larger producers have to be compelled to donate food that would otherwise be wasted.

Presumably the waste food could be bio digested to create gas that can usefully be used for heating.

I’ve read the article (originally 2018 and revisited 2024).
As far as I am aware… from what I’ve seen in the shops, the anti-wastage movement… (and shops giving products to those in need) has been going from strength to strength…
but there is still room for improvement …
we can all help by reducing what we throw away.

I particularly like the notion of products being marked safe to eat (even if not at its very best) after “the date…”

Yes some people with more money than sense are horrified at anything edible which is a day over the date marked on the item. Most of the time it is a date that says best before rather than do not eat after the date. I have thrown away several small melons this summer after opening them and tasting and finding they are disgusting with no flavour and no juice and felt really bad at doing so but no way could I stomach them.

I’ve a Charentaise recipe for melon jam/marmalade somewhere… a friend showed me how… we made a huge batch together one year when she had a glut of melons…
The menfolk did the preparing/chopping… and we girls did the stirring etc… flinging in the spices as appropriate…

Then we celebrated a successful morning’s work by having a delicious lunch which my pal managed to magic out if nowhere (seems to be an excellent French trait). :+1:
