Social Media?

I’m curious, how the majority of users on this platform “survivefrance” consume social media. Is it facebook, instagram, X/Twitter, etc? Or, none at all ? What do you folks think?

Facebook – No. Swamped by adverts and idiots
Instagram- Never looked at it
Twitter/X – Owned by Evil Musk. Say no more. Fortunately the “X” trademark means switch off NOW

Other specific theme based, and smaller networks like this one, on subjects that interest me.

I don’t, unless you count the very occasional political YT video.

Member of several other “subject focused” forums for my other interests.

Rather to my own surprise I have joined and stayed with a couple of French facebook groups where camping-caristes discuss and share tips on places to visit and places to stay. I joined and quickly left other similar groups too but these two seem friendly and civilised with posts that are of interest. I look at them most days.

Apart from an occasional foray into Linkedin to see what old colleagues are up to, I actually use nothing. I have an alter ego on Facebook and Instagram in case I’m directed to some information there, but I’ve never posted. I do a spot of random abuse every now and then on X/Twitter to wind up rightwing nutcases, bit like one does on the Mail online :face_with_hand_over_mouth: I’ve never even looked at TikTok.

In all these endeavours, your VPN is your best friend :slightly_smiling_face:

Facebook, though less and less as it’s practically unusable on mobile but not too bad on the desktop with the Facebook Purity addon, which clear out all of the ads and suggested pages. If it wasn’t for a couple of useful groups then I probably wouldn’t use it at all.
Twitter, though it’s becoming a bit of a right-wing cesspool.
Reddit, again for a couple of useful groups (or whatever they’re called there)
Bluesky
I forgot LinkedIn but, as I get closer to retirement, I’m finding it oddly less interesting

That’s about it.

Facebook - used until about 10 years ago. It’s not great.
Diaspora/Libertree - still visit occasionally.
Xitter - have posted when required for work, but would not use it personally.
LinkedIn - professionally useful.
Instagram - just not interested.
Specific forums - have been an active participant on a variety since the late '90s, presently help moderate another forum.

What do you use and what do you think about them?

None!

Facebook : never ever.
Instagram : never ever.
TikTok : odd videos occasionally when referred to by a favourite tube channel.
Twitter occasionally.

Facebook - with the greatest reluctance, and with the kind permission of my dog. He lets me use his account, solely to track the antics of our hyper-active Maire and Mairie, (who only ever seem to post relevant information on FB). I have never, ever posted myself on FB. I certainly don’t have any FB “friends”.

No other social media, of any description, bar SF, which is of course thoroughly enjoyable, and educational.

SF’s sufficient for me. I have had a linked-in account forever, but only use to track former students, who seem to use it when starting their professional careers.

I get a lot of global web traffic through academia.edu, but that’s not really social media, it’s a very effective means of sharing academic research papers.

None at all for me.

Facebook to keep up with a few ex colleagues and a couple of topics of special interest, and an independently run parrot forum.

I found Facebook groups really useful for gathering information ahead of my Big Move to France. An estate agent in France recommended it to me. I did learn a lot but then I’m pretty good at sniffing out misinformation and disregarding it.
Now I mostly use it to keep up with friends that live far away from me., so it’s nice.
I’m on linked in, instagram, tiktok, and X, but inactive on them all. I was interested to try them but didn’t feel any need to continue with them.

Mostly Instagram. And sometimes Facebook A great way to find out about what is going on locally as I find a lot of French restaurants, fêtes etc have little or no info on their websites.

I knew they could talk, but didn’t realise they could also type…

So @bingo-junior let us know what you use, and perhaps also tell us a bit more about why you asked the question.
