Something extraordinary is happening in America

Hi and welcome to the forum. Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your interest in France.

Aided by IBM’s early punchcard counting machines. Something IBM don’t like people reminding them of.

Apparently Jaguar failed to get the memo.

That’s an interesting perspective. Fox yes - it’s the biggest channel and it’s vaguely RW, but overall? I’m not so sure. Seems to me the mainstream media is mainly liberal/progressive. The clue is in the advertising, eg the recent controversially woke Jaguar ad

oh the media were entirely complicit with the woke left delusion. ā€œTrump is a threat to democracyā€, ā€œhe’s basically Hitlerā€. They joined in with gay abandon and they look very stupid now. Their viewing and readership figures have gone into free fall

Indeed

We could do with some of those to record the slaughter in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon today.

You’re back Mike  How was the naughty step? Any lessons learned you like to share?

@billybutcher How do I move this to the motoring category :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Quick reminder that the last time he lost an election he refused to accept the result and incited an insurrection on the Capitol.

I’m not sure that the simple fact of winning an election means that he is now entirely blameless of all past wrongdoing

Have a lovely day

You must not be watching Fox news, unlike a lot of Americans. The most popular news network. If they don’t outright lie ($ 787.5M settlement), they simply forget to report anything negative about anything Team Right.

Vaguely right wing in the way that the Pope is vaguely Catholic.

Here’s the latest extraordinary thing according to the NYT:

"President-elect Donald J. Trump is keeping secret the names of the donors who are funding his transition effort, a break from tradition that could make it impossible to see what interest groups, businesses or wealthy people are helping launch his second term.

Mr. Trump has so far declined to sign an agreement with the Biden administration that imposes strict limits on that fund-raising in exchange for up to $7.2 million in federal funds earmarked for the transition. By dodging the agreement, Mr. Trump can raise unlimited amounts of money from unknown donors to pay for the staff, travel and office space involved in preparing to take over the government.

Mr. Trump is the first president-elect to sidestep the restrictions, provoking alarm among ethics experts.

Those seeking to curry favor with the incoming administration now have the opportunity to donate directly to the winning candidate without their names or potential conflicts ever entering the public sphere. And unlike with campaign contributions, foreign nationals are allowed to donate to the transition…"

I’m sure there’s a perfectly valid reason for keeping the names of those donors contributing to the transition secret.

I am also sure we’ll be able to hear the same thing from Fox News.

When pigs fly.

Most of them probably aren’t licentious homosexuals, despite what Fox viewers might believe…

But should it matter if they were?

Of course, other reasons for avoiding clichĆ©s are available…

Yes John, I learned a lot. My temporary ban was for being ā€˜combative’. It seemed strange because I feel as though I am always perfectly reasonable. I’m speculating that getting banned really depends on how many people complain about you and if you hold unpopular opinions (i.e. not left-wing) you’re more likely to get complained about. In my experience, left of centre people find it really difficult to tolerate contrary opinions and their instinct is to suppress rather than engage. I do accept that by way, whoever manages the forum needs to make a judgement call that will make most people happy, so I’m not complaining about my temporary ban. In fact, I’m glad it was so temporary (2 days I think) and that the admin explained what it was for, so no hard feelings on my part

Say what? I can’t unpick the layers of irony there. Comes of not having an ā€˜ology’

Well, I’d say rather perfectly polite. But ā€œone may smile, and smile, and be a villainā€ As old Bill Shakespeare wrote.

I’m glad there are no hard feelings. :slightly_smiling_face:

I agree with you here, staunch dem that I am. Immediately after the 2022 midterm elections, the dems should have selected someone younger and more with it to take over in 2024. Our toxic trait: we pretty much play by the old rules, regardless, and get punched in the face every time. Sometimes you have to fight fire with a blowtorch, and not a matchbook.

Hi @mikep
That was actually user error on my part. Your explanation should have read ā€œtaking up too much staff timeā€ which was in fact, the actual reason.

If anyone is interested, the above is actually why the majority of users get suspended / banned! Just something to think about…

Have a lovely week everyone!

Hi Cat, well, I don’t want to take up too much staff time. Have you considered introducing a block function? If I could block the easily offended from seeing my posts, that would solve the problem, no? In the meantime, I will somehow try and find a balance between speaking freely and avoiding upsetting people by expressing opinions they don’t share.
