StrongVPN Blocked

Just as a footnote we use the iPlayer Radio app on our iPads & they stopped working this morning as did our internet radio. We had to access the radio through our satellite tv dish & the old Humax Freesat doofer. Heard on the BBC news at lunchtime that their internet services had been down due to a cyber attack. Times are very strange, I think.

No!

The only time it doesn't work is when the wifi is poor in the loo-maybe TMI, but otherwise it's fine. Plus they offer 24hr email support that I have found is great.

thanks Roger for this.

Remember - it was Tim's post which started this thread and he said that STRONG VPN was no longer working with iPlayer. Is this your experience,

cheers

geoff

I use StrongVPN for my Macs, iPhones & iPads & it works fine with Orange internet. I think the annual sub was €55. If the wifi is diminished, as when I take the iPad to read on the loo (!) it won't work. I find SVPN's email technical support excellent & very quick. They even offered to help me change the router so I could get iPlayer on the Smart TV. I did not bother, but bought a Mag Box & subscribe to UKTV France to get all the Sky channels via the internet. This was to watch Derby County on Sky Sports. The sub includes HD but living in the rural Gironde I can only use SD for the football.

We have a subscription to The Times & Sunday Times that has video clips of the Premiership action that without SVPN has a 'Not available in your area message'. BBC iPlayer works fine & with an old Apple TV connected to the TV whatever is on the iPad we can see on the TV.

Geoff, to do what you want I think you would need to re-program another router that can be configured for VPN-here's a link http://strongvpn.com/vpn_routers_new.html . They will advise on suitable routers & help you set up yours-if you do something wrong you may 'brick' your router. We use these

"Netgear PLP1200-100FRS Pack de 2 Adaptateurs CPL 1200 Mbps Blanc"

to connect Orange router to Smart TV without wires trailing across the room.

well I was all set to instal and use STRONG VPN this coming year - mainly because most subscribers to thos topic said only good things about it - but alasit seems I may have to change my plans. Perhaps someone can advise me - all I want is bbc iplayer. No live TV, just iplayer to play on my smart tv. No tablet, no ipad - just my tv.

So far in this thread we have had users using:

identity cloaker, tunnel bear, proXPN, VPN unlimited, moochie media, hola, overplay and cyberghost.

Which one should i try I wonder?

Well it seems StrongDNS is the way forward for us. I think less known VPNs are working. I think the biggies were targeted and taken out as they were easy pickings.

So a 'Smart DNS' or 'Smart DNS Proxy' is needed (UnBlockUs, StrongDNS, etc)

Pluses - Can install on router, so all devices can access it

No slow down in speed as connection is not encrypted.

Minuses - Not encrypted

Need to refresh the service if you use elsewhere

Will be defeated at some point I am sure

Oh and solved the ITV issue on the iPad. Needed to delete and reinstall the app. Do NOT let it access locaton services and then it will ask for a postcode.

I'm using Tunnel Bear , working very well with all UK sites . $4.99 a month and excellent customer service .

Check out Identity Cloaker - read their blurb on the web. Perhaps a lot more professional than many.

Yes john I use filmon - great and such a choice of TV from all over the world, let alone th UK. VPNUnlimited is ideal for watching UK TV clips on Facebook and news feeds though.

I forgot to mention that the BBC and others have noticed the huge growth in people using VPNs to change their locations, and so they are considering making plans to commercialise this. It could be good or bad depending upon how they charge and what they offer, but i would still want Dave and Plus4 in any case.

Alan

i dont use vpn i just go to filmon.com on my ipad and access all UK tv programmes free of any charge ..I then can send the picture from my ipad direct to my smart tv...

I can recommend Cyberghost, but its patchy and sometimes I have to log on and off to get BBC, as even though it makes my IP a Bristol location, the BBC don't always accept it. ITV accept it every time. I only use Cyberghost on a windows PC, which I expect to be unsafe anyway.

I can also recommend Filmon, as I have been using their paid service for almost a year now, and it allows me to record all of the UK programs I want and watch them when it suits me. I run it on an iMac and and Ipad and the mac has a plex server into the TV room, so that I don't have to walk back and forth with a USB key, unless I want to keep a show forever, like The Bridge, for example.

I noticed some confusion between ISPs and VPNs in other replies, and I don't really know what it means.

Alan

VPN Unlimited works very well. Also use Filmon for all TV programs

Hi, I have been using ProXPN for a year or so. It still works fine with iPlayer, I checked yesterday. It's nice because it's so easy to change where you want to appear. I use it for iPlayer now and then, but also for other things like watching YouTube videos that aren't available here or to get a different NetFlix catalog.

Hi Simon, sorry assumed you were going to UK. Ok thanks for explaining. I think it’s obvious I’m not at all technically minded or forget these days

Have been using MyExpatNet vpn for several years now on our computers and at the moment everything is OK. However on the TV via a droid box, Channel 4 says we are not in the UK. FilmOn works OK but a lot of buffering some times, mainly in the evening. Had the paid for service for 'recording' but due to the poor internet service decided to stop. BBC1 and 2 very good via the satellite at the moment on the Manhattan box but no other channels (20km north of Pau and the Pyrenees).

Hi Shirley - hope you had a great Christmas! I certainly did but I've been at home in the Ariege so I didn't understand your 'good trip back' comment.

I'm afraid you've lost me with your queries about Smart DNS (overplay). It really is very simple....

Once signed up, all you need to do is change the DNS settings on the devices (phone, pc, tablet, TV etc) you want to connect. No software, no downloads, no VPN and, importantly, you do not need to touch your router. I pay USD$4,95 per month - I don't use their VPN service - no need to.

So, I use Smart DNS to seamlessly access the UK version BBC website, BBC iPlayer, ABC TV (love 'Nashville') ITV Player, 4OD, Demand5, Amazon Instant Video etc, etc, etc.

For live TV streaming I use an IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) supplier as I would need an interplanetary sized dish in my area! In any case IPTV is miles better than satellite TV so long as you have decent broadband speed.

You e just reminded me Michelle with your explanation of how it works, that Filmon is how I used to watchUK TV on my computer in the Herault once I set up home on my own , I’d forgotten about it. I’ll give it a go with iPad to se if anything happens.

Brian, not that I need it now as have TV but did deliberately ask for a 60cm dish installation up here 1st in the Mayenne, although the Satellite guy who set it all up on 1st move here said I didn’t need one that big,

I insisted because I was already aware 2 years ago that the BBC were playing silly B’s then and now seemingly. Even the listing on the Humax don’t appear to be quite as they were before, with the timings on some channels all over the place as I scroll through them!

One thing I’m not blaming on any individuals over here, me included, somethings going on with the satellite they are using perhaps? Is it still Astra D, ut at least it’s something I can always look up again!

I don't have an iPad, so am not sure about cyberghost. www.filmon.com is a website for live-streaming though, so you can easily check the free service. Just go on the site, select "free" and then choose "UK Live TV" and your channel. The comments on the screen on the left, disappear when you go to full-screen mode (you'll see what I mean). They stick an ad on first. After about 30 secs of watching, it asks again if you want free or premium. Just choose free again (you might need to reselect the channel) but you can then watch undisturbed. So there's a couple of minutes' faff to get going but then it works fine.

It is a general block by the Beeb and not a French thing. My nephew who watches a lot of BBC in Switzerland was unable to watch Dr Who yesterday and is livid. If he had been at home he could have used Zattoo, but he happened to be at his girlfriend's place with his tablet. He called us to see what Dr Who was about this afternoon. BBC are getting tighter bit by bit. Freeview is fine - for now.
