Suffering for our art

ah stealth marketing hahahha. I may well do.... what's the breakfast comprise?

You could of course take an art course Ron, with a certain artist in the Aude! ;-)

@ Suzy

Thanks Suzy, handy to know. I have never had much joy with Watercolours, I always end up with a heavy overworked result, a bit more success with Acrylics as you can just keep hammering away I've found. ( back to painting by numbers in the interim lol )

Neil, try breaking it up in the middle, that should make it less imposing and less of a band. What does your wife think?

I use good old Winsor & Newton and Van Gogh watercolours Ron on 300gm paper.I cant work on Arches heavy paper as I need to have some detail and I dont like too much wet in wet.

YAY! patterns ...........I like it, yes it does look better with the top tenth cropped down to the lower portion of the big cloud, I agree.

Title? how about "lines of vines" or "lignes des vignes"

this really reminds me of a drawing I once did when I first came to do the vindages in 1981 will now have to see if it's still around.............;

I would be interested to know Neil if you use a binder with your media? If so, I gather adding detail to may not be problematic, but re-painting say this top section would involve a re-paint over the top? Again no real problem as your style comprises 'flat layers'. But there must be a limit as to how often one can re-work without getting 'muddy'.

Suzy, your own to die for style which I assume pure watercolour and at that on paper, must be less forgiving that Acrylics as, in the main you are reliant on the luminosity of the paper. I would be interested to know if you use very expensive paints?

I quite like the cloud actually. It is so styalised that it works. (I think!)

Very Simpsonesque...

just looked at it again...... cloud still bothering me. thank god we can try a few alternatives with photoshop.

Thanks Ron, found the detail in the vines drove me a bit crazy. Will probably get re attached to the other canvases as this rather warm weather is due to continue for the next week.

Thanks Suzy. Technique is layers of flat acrylic. The big cloud is a bit of a large lump so may address that - will look at alternatives with the jpeg first.

I would agree with Suzy in that this must be astonishing at full size, but to my view the proportions, flow, colours and depth are spot on. Clearly a great deal of intricate work here, it must be very therapeutic and satisfying Neil, to render such pieces in this recognisable style that you have established. I think that to produce paintings which also lend themselves to graphic replication so well is an art in itself... especially nowadays. This series is one of the most popular judging by the comments received on the Art Department FaceBook Page, and subsequent linked feeds. Well done sir! looking forward to your Retrospective ( whenever ) More power to your elbow! ( assuming is is now de-gummed from the canvas )

Hi Neil......I just cant figure out your technique. the painting looks good, not sure about the shape of the large cloud, its so imposing it detracts from the scene below.Looks better cropped just at the top of it I think. Love the paysage though. It must look amazing at 80 cm.

Voila my opinion.
