I always think before I speak or press send.
It seems that I was naive in expecting answers to seemingly simple questions rather than random irrelevancies.
Clearly I should pay more heed to the words of Marx, Groucho, that is.

Bed not ground.
All will be revealed by the OED

At last an answer that is relevant, for which I thank you.
Clearly the money was a loan not a gift, my mistake. It seems subtlety is lost on me and I-can only understand when a man responds with words of one syllable.
So KarenLot was right?
If I was you, I would take advice (from a notaire) to formally document the loan, plus any repayment schedule, any interest that might be due (both presumably unlikely) and how it gets treated on the death of one or both of you/your wife. In the UK, for example, an interest free loan would simply be deducted from the estate on death. I have not researched what the consequences would be in France and it would certainly be worthwhile seeking the notaire’s views on that issue.
Hmmmm
That’s even more worrying ![]()
Of course not. At the time of my writing the loan was a gift that has now, thanks to George1, transmorphed into a loan.
KarenLot, life would be so much simpler if we all said what we meant but then, I am just a man (if I may borrow a line from JC Superstar)
Why? Are you suggesting that I should NOT think before etc….
It was a joke ![]()
I’m glad you got everything sorted out.
Thank you but I will probably take refuge in the words of Marx, Groucho of course, regarding club membership.
