That political discussion with occasional humour thread

Or America. Or many other countries.

i suspect though that “twas ever thus” - we just see the cock-ups in public thanks to the media and the internet.

I would largely agree except Labour have not looked technically competent since Blair stepped down (possibly not even then). As an ineffective opposition they share responsibility for the present state.

The difficulty being that technical competence is not sexy and does not generate salacious headlines.

Things were not in a great state in 2010 when Labour handed the reins to the Tories - but there were “external influences” responsible for that.

The system in the UK is set up so that opposition is always ineffective.

Especially against a majority of 80. It used to make me laugh (that might not be the true emotion) when recent Tory ministers complained about Labour blocking this and Labour blocking that, when the Tories had that 80 majority and the main issue was that their own party couldn’t agree.

Some people just don’t look under the surface and get carried away with the doom and gloom politics where everything is terrible and needs fixing.
I’ve said here before that my brother and his wife were all for Brexit but changed their minds when they realised that they were lied to and that it was going to affect them negatively.
Guess what. In the summer when I visited, they were both fir Farrage, wonderful guy he was. When I pointed out to my brother that if Farage got in, he would almost certainly lose his Motability car and probably his disability benefit as well (he had a stroke) that made him think. He has a severely disabled granddaughter who needs lots of care and support from the state. When I pointed out that much of that may disappear he didn’t believe me at first. I told him he should do some research beyond youtube videos and find out for himself. He has and is now much less certain.
I just wish that I could persuade many more people to look further that the end of their nose when making such important decisions.

Reform have a lot of supporters though, sadly. But a friend of ours who has form for falling out with people joined Reform and even helped out in the constituency office. Then Rupert Lowe left and she ended up joining Ben Habib’s new party.

Oddly, she objected to Reform being run as a company but as I understand it, Habib bought an existing company and renamed it Advance UK.

I think they pick up people who have become disillusioned with the mainstream parties, in the (mistaken) hope that voting for Reform will “teach ‘them’ a lesson”.

I think that’s partially how we got Brexit, along with all the lies.

How do you get people to do at least a minimum of research into the programmes put forward by political parties?

The red bus was made to be withdrawn with its lies posted on its sides, but it never seemed to people to take that as a warning that the Brexit argument was predicated on false promises.

Well, Kemi has apparently seen the two flags behind Rachel so her most recent speech was given with four flags behind her!

There was a time when I thought the UK could never be the US, but with every day that passes I’m much less sure of that.

Thankfully they haven’t yet gone as far as what a recent US design critic described as ‘regional car dealership rococo.’

And of course Macron blew Trump away by giving him a tour of some of the real stuff (tho’ Trump was doubtless unaware that original residents’ tenancy came to a rather messy end)

There was a time I thought the US could never be 1930’s Germany. But every day the Leader proves that I was wrong.
