A small number of asylum seekers whose claims are rejected will be offered an “increased incentive payment” of £10,000 per person and up to £40,000 per family to leave Britain under a pilot scheme, Shabana Mahmood announces.
Seems an excellent way of attracting more illegal immigrants…

I dearly want Labour to succeed - not because I particularly support the party but for the reason that the UK needs a period of sanity to recover from the Brexit parliaments and revolving door prime ministers - but Labour isn’t getting the message that the gaffs and stupid policies are not helping.

So, the reality is a bit more prosaic - it is not a general offer, it seems to be specifically aimed at around 150 families, £10k per individual and up to four individuals per family and is expected to save around £20 million given the cost to the taxpayer of keeping a roof over their heads - said to be £158k a year. If they accept they have to be out of the country within seven days.
Now, personally, I would expect at least half of them to take the money and disappear so I’d pay them by means of a pre-loaded credit card to be physically given to them only on landing, at an airport of their choice, outside the UK.
The thing is that Farage and his supporters won’t look beyond the headline and they have already labelled it “an incentive to come to the UK”.
Obviously a silly question, I’m sure (is she really the Home Secretary?) Mahmood has already spotted the flaw, but …
If they can be forcibly removed, why is the plan to pay them?

Isn’t that around three times the average UK family’s annual income?
Although other countries do have a similar generous go away policy, It does seem to look like a brainstorming session where someone threw away the good suggestions and kept the bad ones.
