The Trump Effect

“each country already has enough natural resources so why would they want more?”

Assume you dropped history before O levels

“Trump has a disregard for the loss of life”

I don’t need to ask you for evidence because you have none. Please don’t respond with a blizzard of tangential academic-speak. You know that won’t work with me

If you genuinely believe that Donald Trump disregards the value of human life, all I can do is advise you to wean yourself off mainstream media, because you’re being brainwashed.

carlmt, no need to be sneery, just engage with the discussion, you’re welcome to disagree

With respect Mike, it’s difficult to “engage with the discussion” when you are so dismissive of everyone else’s opinions.

Putin is a dictator living in his own headspace, he will use the re-election of Trump for his own ends dependant on how Trump treats the conflict going forward. The Donald often says much but does little so if he does cut military aid to Ukraine Putin will simply carry on with the fighting knowing that without US support Zelensky is in a weak position as Europe cannot pick up the slack.

OK, you may be right, but it would be handy if you could give us firm evidence of the untold things of which you speak. Merely saying they are so doesn’t mean they are true.

Neither side of this discussion can be taken seriously without credible* source material being shown.

*Yes, credible…

University of YouTube?

@badger … and what in your opinion is ‘credible’?

  1. Something written by an established & traceable journalist or academic who has no financial affiliation (past, present or possible) with the subject under scrutiny.

  2. An intelligent opinion freely offered on a non-monetised platform i.e. if someone is going to gain from your click they are likely to be exaggerating something to attract attention, or even supplying ‘alternative facts’.

  3. Ideally 1 & 2 should be combined.

Good luck.

Okay, since you asked, I quite rate this guy—Mike Benz—as a reliable source of information about many things, particularly Ukraine. Scroll to 1’34” for his take on the situation there. It’s turgid stuff and requires some brainpower to process it all. My problem with mainstream media is that it’s more concerned with telling neat stories that appeal to people’s innate prejudices rather than seeking truth and explaining complex situations that will have people reaching for the zapper to change channels.

As far as I’m concerned anything on Facebook is dodgy because on it anyone can post anything, so it fails a reliable source. You keep opting for these dodgy outlets.

Mainstream media in print and online covers a broad spectrum of political interests from Fox to the NYT or the Guardian, so why do you bother with these rabbit hole guys who opine from some bedroom in flyover country in order to make a living from hits by conspiracy hungry dupes

Mike Benz is a highly respected commentator on international affairs with over half a million followers. Rather than criticising his credentials, why not consider what he has to say?

Unfortunately the number of followers an online opiner has is no indicator of the quality or accuracy of their posts.

ok, let’s not consider what he has to say.

Benz has a right wing agenda though so his views on Ukraine already start with a bias.

Maybe, whatever ‘right wing’ means these days, but his main point - that it’s about access to resources - just makes perfect sense. It’s the same reason the US went into Iraq, to dominate the Gulf. I’m not claiming his analysis is right - I don’t know enough to judge - but it’s logical at least and consistent with history.

History is littered with errors and unfortunately they don’t seem to decrease.

All I can say is Micky Pee Pee has succeeded in winding you all up with his bullshit :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Fool me once … fool me twice

I mean, understanding WW1 through the prism of Downton Abbey

More X shit, bravo

I can see that trying to discuss anything is a waste of time.

But you don’t discuss, you start a thread with a load of stuff without a believable source and then when people disagree with you you swipe the arguement away as only coming from mainstream media.

We still don’t know what your authorative non-mainstream media is.
