The weather!

Sorry to hear that Jane - hope it gets sorted soon!

After suffering a brief outage yesterday afternoon, my partner Di’s electricity went off again at 3.30pm this afternoon (she lives on the edge of Bodmin Moor so was in the Goretti red wind zone).

UK National Grid estimate she should be reconnected… by 4pm on Sunday!!

I hope that is a severe piece of pessimism. Since her power has mostly been on today I’m assuming they have shut her off for safety reasons while they fix wires further down the line…

ETA: Madame’s power came back on at 11pm so all is now well in Pastieland…

My sympathies to any and all affected.

Just remember, this has nothing to do with global warming, there has evidently been power cuts regularly for the last few thousand years at least…

Had some nice hail today. Right after removing the tree.

We live in a small village alongside a departmental road where the speed limit drops from 70kph to 50. This afternoon there have been two separate accidents at the same point on the same, not very sharp bend- a car going off the road and an artic traction unit going into the back of some unfortunate.

Unfortunately I set out to drive to the hardware store just before the rain got really intense and was held up for twenty minutes while they removed the truck. When the traffic started flowing again everyone was driving much more slowly than usual, but brake lights were going on continuously because so many people were still driving too close to the car in front.

I recognise the Marcillac sandstone - you’re located in the Marcillac / Clairvaux / Saint Christophe triangle?

Yes. Sadly it has been snow and ice every Tuesday/Thursday morning so we haven’t braved the trip to Decazeville for the lessons yet. Are they still going?

Yes, they started again this week, seem to be very centred around food and this Tuesday, they were dishing out huge slices of galette de roi - but not for me straight after breakfast. Just turn up when you can it’s very informal, but interesting and useful.

Also we’d be happy to meet some NYers!

Weather looks good for Tuesday so as long as we don’t catch something over the weekend we’ll be there

Very pretty indeed

Since it is snowing and blowing here I have given myself permission not to struggle and slide 1km to the Marie for the voeux.

It’s not appealing, is it?

A relative in the south of England had a hospital appointment yesterday. When she got out of the car, she realised that they’d only gritted the pavements and that the hospital car park was sheet ice. So she walked like a penguin, took three times as long as usual but got there intact.

When she arrived at the reception desk, the lady said ‘I watched you walking like a penguin, you must have done health and safety’. Sadly some of her colleagues didn’t know about this and were in A&E after falling. One is an A&E nurse who has a broken arm.

It seems sad to have lost nurse hours because someone didn’t take enough care over gritting.

Yes pavements and car parks don’t get done. I went into Guildford early on Wednesday for business networking breakfast and the car park surface was extremely slippery.

When I worked at Salts Mill in Saltaire the local council were very good at gritting the roads and pavements. Everyone came into the mill through the main entrance where your options were a large steep double stone staircase or a vehicle entrance onto large cobbles. One day the entire workforce was unable to get to the mill because of thick sheet ice on the steps and cobbled entrance. Some tried going through the rear entrance but that was also cobbled. Mayhem followed with hundreds of people on foot and about 100 cars grid locking the entire area. Whoops :open_mouth:

And did they use salt?

It’s twenty-five years since I visited Saltaire, but I found it delightful

Saltaire village, with the mill is a strange place. The village is also a World Heritage site.
