This week’s must buy!

Ok so here you are , my purchase of the week…

As you may have seen I have recently embarked on my first vegetable patch for many a year and this week saw the harvesting of the very first homegrown lettuce!!

This might not be a big deal for many of you but for someone who grew up in a flat in London, it was pretty incredible.

One thing we have bought and found to be utterly brilliant for garden watering is this crop sprayer type tripod. There are cheaper models available but this is what I’ve got and I highly recommend it.

Yes, it is an Amazon affiliate link but every little helps as they say and I’ll only ever recommend stuff I’ve bought, used AND rate!

And here’s My First Lettuce

Nice lettuce, but where we are anything based on a hosepipe is usually banned for most of veg growing season.

I guess we are lucky to have a well then!

I’m lucky enough to have a well too but the last time we were under water restrictions, drawing water from wells was expressly forbidden to protect the water table levels. I’m sure that the regulations vary from place to place though.

Guess I’m lucky enough to be living in Normandy (where it’s currently pissing it down and water restrictions are not high on anyone’s conversational agenda…) then!

All’s well that ends well.

Just checking , is "currently pissing it down " a technical gardening expression /term

On the subject of wells I believe you find that@ChrisMann and myself have had a comprehessive exchange of posts on this subject.

More of a general meteorological term, than one exclusively used for gardening.

Happy to accept that version, but would point out that cat: was talking about gardening and the watering of said garden

I remember using a sprinkler in our first year here. It does mean tomatoes get blight very early

Is there a Normandy in the SW?

Yep that would be my concern too Cat, I think you’re better with drip line irrigation, a lot of veg (and indeed ornamentals) can’t cope with overhead watering .

Nice lettuce! Not sure if you know but I haven’t picked a whole lettuce in a few years now, I plant about 12 every 3 or 4 months and when I need lettuce I go around picking off the outside leaves until I have what I need for that meal, they just keep growing, I was gobsmacked when I first tried it the magic never ending lettuces
