Thread drift and splitting threads

Just a gentle reminder that - apart from “stay on topic threads” - thread drift is tolerated and that for the occasional case where it might be beneficial to split a topic the right way is to suggest it and/or ask me, not to try to demand that it be done because you don’t like the direction a thread is taking.

But perhaps people could also let a serious query or topic run on its track for a while longer before pushing it into the drift siding. It can be frustrating when a sensible set of exchanges gets sidelined within 24 hours.

I think some people don’t pay any attention to the context in which a comment is being posted. Are they reading it on a phone and cannot see what topic is being addressed?

My pet hate is the way the cheerful thread will suddenly get thrown into a miserable discussion about illnesses.

I thought that might have been me for my post about lack of response to @Roger_Lapin ‘s thread about Palestine Action (I see it wasn’t). Re-reading my post though I think I could have come across a bit ‘preachy’, so apologies for that, nothing was intended in that vein.

Some of you may remember this thread…

The food thread drift is quite often deliberate, when things start to get heavy.

I really do wonder what the point of drifitng away from the main thread is - why not start a new topic?

Because the drift is organic and usually over multiple posts each of which moves the conversation only slightly away from the last.

Ditto Billy - but also it’s usually not a deliberate intention to divert from the main thread but because someone has an anecdote that’s only tangentially related, and that then sets the conversation off in a different direction.

Or because those of us who are of a humorous disposition see an opportunity to drop in a pun or two (mea culpa).

No, those are puns in the worst possible taste lobbed in as a drive-by crime against anything that could be described as wit (just kidding  )
