Until things kicked off this week I’d forgotten about another US disaster, the Gwangju uprising. The student uprising was violently suppressed by the South Korean military with the approval and logistical support of the United States Carter administration.
Now, just like years ago, the West doesn’t know whether to back Russia and Iran in keeping the odious Assad in power, or supporting a potential ISIS, despite what the say, resurgence. Meanwhile the Gaza genocide rolls on.
It’s not really confidence inspiring in our Western leaders. What a bloody mess.
And of course at the moment there’s a semi-vacuum of power (if one can have such a thing) But I have little confidence in any leader, I tend my garden, cook, walk, try to finish a book, and opine on SF.
In one sense that’s a bit pathetic, but I’m an old immigrant living in a village in la France profonde and there’s only so much such a person can impact on. Meanwhile, I sign umpteen petitions every day.
This evening had a great dinner at our village crèperie with our closest neighbours, including a very funny guy, who since his husband died a few months ago is now ‘the only gay in the village’. One does what one can, it’s not much,but maybe some of the effects are cumulative
There’s a Korean made series (romantic fiction not documentary) using it as a setting which came out a couple of years ago and stirred up a bit of controversy as it was deemed critical of what is still considered a very touchy subject.
