Friend is having problems retrieving mail from outlook as she is recieving the first message it takes so long it times out so is unable to get any at all, she is on Orange dialup any ideas

Yep I agree with Steve - if there’s a web mail service have a look in there and most likely there will be a email with a large attachment waiting to be downloaded. Remove that and the rest should download fine. Nothing to prevent the user reading the email text first.

It’s quite likely that the first email in the queue is large or has a large attachment. I would suggest that they go online to their email account (messagerie) and have a look at that first email online and delete it which would then allow the rest to be downloaded to their Outlook program.
