Been looking into toothpaste and the fluoride debate…concluded that the uk based company kingfisher tick most of my boxes and they make a fluoride and non fluroide tube range, that said also have a few toothpaste recipes that I intend trying, here’s one
2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
4 tablespoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon guar gum
8 tablespoons water
5 drops peppermint, clove or citrus pure essential oil.
Place all ingredients (except essential oil) into a pot and cook on low temperature, stirring frequently for 5 mins or until a paste-like consistency. Add essential oil to taste and store in sterile jar. Use as normal.
I will also experiment just using the baking powder (whitens teeth) some sea salt (kills bacteria) for a dry mix and just adding different essential oils (for flavour).
At last I have made the toothpaste and currently testing it. Lovely consistency, two weeks old now and losing its peppermint flavour a little but still teeth feel clean after brushing. Now making peppermint oil to use in future batches.
I can't Elaine sorry, I am using it in a project development and looked at how effective it was, it's widespread use would seem to suggest it's made by chemical companies all over the world but it's chemical components are the common ones Carbon, hydrogen, chlorine and nitrogen. If it had a common name like salt for instance it may sound friendlier than say sodium chloride.
Would like to know if you could add say strawberry essential oil to your mix.
Thanks John. Will look onto this. At the moment it’s a big experiment. Can you tell me where chlorhexidine originates from or how it is made? I seem to only be reading about its healing properties and not its origins. I move over soon so will get to making some paste soon
Baking soda does whiten teeth but also tends to make them more sensitive, also kills yeast type infections like ulcers, thrush etc.
Sea salt, does it really kill bacteria? are there no bacteria in the sea?

What's wrong with chlorhexidine mouthwash?
Hi Rachael,I bought my veggie glycerin and guar gum off ebay just in small amounts to experiment with first. Now looking for little wide neck screw top glass jars to store in. At the moment I am between houses as I don’t complete on My french house until 4th July (so no kitchen) that said, my friend and I are hoping to try out different recipes next week so may have some feedback for you then -)
Well done Elaine, thanks. For the homemade recipe, where can I buy veg glycerin and guar gum please? - the chemist? Looking forward to the results of your experiment.
I will feed back results -))
Sounds really interesting Elaine, especially as I really don't like minty tastes, they are always so artificiel. I'd like to try a citrus one, thanks for sharing this, definitely interested to know how it works out.
