What does Labour believe?

Not sure why you deleted the post, I tend to agree. The sheer scale of some of the Tory misdemeanors compared to the Labour ones are breathtaking. A minister who employs someone to manage a property who fails to get a landlord license in one of the few places in the country where it’s necessary versus a Chancellor who was being investigated for tax evasion involving millions who didn’t tell parliament about it and subsequently had to pay the tax plus a substantial fine. The Tory press had the former on the front page, the latter ? not a murmur.

And, for anypone unsure of what “not a murmur” means, here are a couple of examples.

Etc.

The pair of you are missing the point.

Starmer made a big thing of being “different” to the Tories which immediately opens up increased scrutiny so even the smallest error gets highlighted. Unfortunately for the government, there have been several similar errors over a short space of time and from very senior members of the cabinet.

Tne Mail article, although I can’t read all of it without signing up and paying, seems to be just a single online article couched in terms of ‘claims’. If anyone has the full article I’d like to read it all. Don’t think you’ll find a front page print headline. The Telegraph article is more balanced, but is just reporting the facts after the event. Compare that to the front page Daily Mail headline complete with what looks like photoshopped or AI generated pictures of the Chancellor alongside a screaming caption.

Because it was a bit of a rant and there’s no new ground to be broken. It didn’t feel worth the energy.

It’s amazing what justifications we make to treat people differently. I’m not sure Starmer ever claimed to be ‘different’ although I may be wrong. In any case, claiming to be different to the previous Tory government is something to be welcomed. The current government has had a lot less gaffes and disasters than the previous lot. We’ve only had one Labour Prime Minister and one Chancellor so far for a start and I don’t remember them screwing the country over so disastrously that the markets basically told them what to do … or else.

This is just five months after Labour came into power -

‘The public expected us to be squeaky clean … now they think we’re all the same’: how freebiegate rocked Labour | Keir Starmer | The Guardian

When you add in the constant U-turns etc the voting public ignore the good that you’re trying to do and perceive you aren’t any different.

I don’t disagree with you, but perception is largely driven by newspaper headlines. And the newspapers are not equally balanced.

The tabloids went to town over how Milliband ate a bacon sandwich or when Diane Abbott was seen drinking from a can on the tube, but didn’t seem as interested in the guy repeatedly watching porn in the House of Commons, or “Pincher by name, pincher by nature”, or Frank Hester saying Diane Abbott made him hate all black women, to name a few.

A bit of consistency by the British press would be welcome.

If you read the article, the quote about a claim of a promise in the headline doesn’t come from the government, but from an anonymous Labour MP. The full quote is given later in the article and is said to be ‘an expectation’ of the public. This whole ‘they’re just as bad as the other lot’ hand wringing is all about perception, and is fuelled by shrill right wing newspaper headlines. I think I gave a good example of that in my response to Porridge.

It’ll never happen.

I think that is Labour’s biggest problem - they’re very bad at letting everyone know their successes. Also, important to appreciate that change is going to take some time after the last 14 years. However, they have also made some stupid gaffs and decisions - the budget, winter fuel allowance, and sucking up to Trump

For the first time in a long time I’m watching BBC Question Time… Now I remember why I stopped watching it. Two useless MPs, some right-wing podcaster (happily advertising his own podcast at every opportunity) and some woman who’s not been given a chance to talk.

I’m old enough to remember the days when you rarely saw a woman on QT though, like you, I rarely watch it these days. These two facts are not related.

I’m also getting a bit fed up with QT - Fiona cannot control the panel and also, her follow-on questions actually take up more time then getting the public’s views, or allowing the politicians to answer properly.

I’ll give it a few more weeks and see how it goes.

I think most tv and radio journalists like the sound of their own voices far too much; can’t phrase concise questions; don’t listen to the answers.

There are some exceptions.

But, alas, not the only “basic human requirement” the government has had to address.

Labour is a broad church, I think the current archbishops believe in ‘keep digging in the church yard’.

Gorton is a game changer and I’m preparing a new post / thread on it, in the meantime I saw this photo and it didn’t seem out of place to post it here.
