White spirit on paws

Help! We have painters in and dog has managed to get white spirit on his paws. Have washed with them all with dog shampoo. is there anything else i can do vet closed and no answer from mobile!...

So, so happy to hear that.

I confess I didn't realise how extremely toxic it can be until I read your post. It's so easily done though, as you say, because we think of it as being quite innocuous. I managed to varnish our foster dog who attaches himself to me like a limpet and so of course I dripped on him while I was slapping the brush around. Luckily though, because his coat is quite 'woolly', I managed to snip most of the offending gunk off his head quite quickly. Oops.

Hi Valerie,

He's fine thanks, thank goodness! It's such a performance getting him to vet. Thank you so much for your advice. I hope other people might see this and take a bit more care with white spirit around animals and themselves. Everyone uses it and because it's so familiar we think it's safe. I was reading about it and even the vapour can be harmful to animals.

Have a great weekend!

Wendy, how's Mr Sore Paws this morning? No obvious damage I hope.

Blimey! Thanks Wendy I didnt know that. Will be even more vigilante when painting now. Good luck, let us know how he gets on.

Thanks, I think it was only on there for a few minutes and he's asleep on his sofa now, so fingers crossed and thanks again!

Not promising miracles (depends how much/how long on there). The oil may provide a thin protective coating (after it's been soaped off as well of course). Hopefully will prevent worsening and obviously get to the vet in the morning if there's any sign of blistering etc - or just go anyway if you're anything like me. Good luck Wendy. You'll be up fretting all night now. x

It burns cats and dogs and cause irritation and is highly toxic...also carcinogenic to humans

Thanks Valerie! It happened to one of our other dogs yeaars ago and his pads opened up , we took him to the vet and he gave him anti-histamines.

I should thnk he will be fine, if you have washed it all off he cant lick it and ingest it. We wash pour hands in it to get paint off so should be ok!

Wipe the paws with vegetable oil - oil helps to remove oil - and then simple soapy water, not anything with extra chemicals for ticks etc. Plain soap and water.
