Who would you give French nationality to on an exceptional basis?

Too generous!

Actually in addition to all the places you mentioned above, gazing out to sea from the beach at Golfe Juan was another way I connected with Picasso’s Antibes years. The view is probably little changed since he used to draw in the sand in the 1920s and it probably inspired the setting for his monumental neoclassical revival paintings of that decade such as La source.

Another important site at Antibes is the eye-wateringly expensive l’hotel du cap eden roc which in the 1920s became the summer centre of much of the European and American literary and artistic avant-garde

Lastly when staying at Cap d’Antibes we always do a walk up to the wonderful botanical gardens and the Chapelle de la Garoupe above them, which contains centuries of mariners’ votive offerings/thanks - and a nice little café next door.

It’s always nice to be nice, DrMark  . And nice picture too. Glad that Picasso adapted the scene to avoid the golfe Juan marina stuck just in the middle of the (now two) beaches! To my mind the background rocks are reminiscent of the cliffs by the massif d’esterel where it plunges into the sea - south of Cannes, before Agay. My best swimming location.

Thanks for that, we were in Cannes in November, wish I’d known!

The reason I’d thought of Golfe Juan was that Picasso was in that locale when he made the painting, and he used to draw in the sand on that beach. It’s also the setting, albeit much later for one of his most famous photos

Seeing this painting now would surely say “Done by AI !” Particularly the hands and feet :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Picasso was indeed a form of early AI
