Why bother with "top up" insurance

I have top up insurance but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it. Is it really true that you could be faced with a bill of 1000's of euros if you are admitted to hospital? It seems to me from speaking with my physio and some of my friends that emergencies are covered as is anything serious. Is this correct?

I visit the dentist, a cardiologist and my GP fairly regularly but given that a good percentage is covered by my mutuelle, the top up hardly seems worth it. My son has regular hospital appointments and these are covered by the mutuelle too. If I call my insurance company I imagine they will try to convince me that the cover is vital so I thought I'd ask the members on here what their experience has been.

Yes Orthodentics are a horror aren't they. thank goodness thats all over. My husband does have a very large bridge tho' so I keep the cover up for that.

Thanks for that advice Claire. Once my kids have all finished their orthodontic treatment I may be inclined to change ;)

There was a recent discussion on this , but I can't find it.

It's horses for courses . You really have to work out your risk, how often you are ill etc. Don't forget to factor in the accidental medical needs , car accidents , hospitalisation, other people causing you injuries, falling in the street etc. Sorry to sound like a prophet of doom but you do have to consider all eventualities. If however you have an illness that covers 100% of your needs then you don't need a top up.

My parents have recently done their top up with a company that gives back up to 50% of their cotisations at the end of the year so at least they get something back for being healthy .http://www.thelem-assurances.fr/mutuelle-sante
