Windows XP problem

Hi there, I am trying to add to my desk top, Pole emploi, Yahoo, CMB and CPAM icons (for example) by entering their site and then dragging and dropping the web address to my desk top.... which it does, but when I go to click on the shortcut icon it wont load any of the sites. I have checked the default setting on internet connections and it is orange which is what I want it to be but don't understand what I am doing wrong otherwise. Could someone help out this old dinosaur please?! Thanks :-)

Hi Nick,

Thank you too for replying.... Yes, the computer is very old, perhaps i should really think about getting a new one... it causes no end of problems for me... I think it would keel over and die if I load Windows 7 on it lol :-)

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the information I will do as you have suggested!! I think you're right about Orange too, I have found them a real pain in the bum especially when I have problems with my mobile lol Claire :-)

Great advice here from Peter. I would also recommend that approach. As the internal browser in XP is not only old, but also has many security issues as it is so old and you can't upgrade it.

You can get have each of these sites in a browser Tab - using tabbed browsing - and just load either browser and all your sites will be there and available for you to use.

Think of the browser as your new working environment when you are doing this.

Depending on the specification of your PC, you might well be able to upgrade to Windows 7 or an alternative system like Linux without having to buy a new machine. Windows XP is discontinued and is now without proper security support so it is definitely something to plan for.

It really depends on what you use the PC for.

Hi Claire,

My feeling is that this arises 'coz you're using the "browser" that came on the installation disk from Orange. (A browser is the computer program that lets you read and interact with web sites.) Orange normally organize it so that you always have to go to their site whenever you want to use the web, which boosts their advertising revenue no end, but it also means that you're dependent on their keeping things up-to-date (which they're not very good at!) I say this as my old XP system can still get to Yahoo in the way you describe, but I use a copy of Internet Explorer that came straight from Microsoft.

One suggestion would be to add these sites to your favourites inside the browser rather than have desktop icons for them. Alternatively you can download & install your own browser, making it your default. (I personally like the Chrome browser from Google, but Firefox is also very good.) That way, you should be able to get desktop icons in the way you would like.

oh poo.......... guess I'd better find a 3rd job to pay for a new computer then lol thanks anyway Brian :-)

Ho hum, there seem to be increasing numbers of things that don't like XP and Vista, so it is very likely your operating system is 'too old' in their terms. I have the same with URSSAF if I try to use one of our laptops that still runs on Vista.
