I agree… they don’t get even a glance nowadays… but the bells, that’s different.
Here in France, the bells have been a method of communicating Good/Bad News for centuries… and for countryfolk it’s part of their way of life, and the possibility of “missing” someone’s funeral… is certainly cause for panic…
In our village the church bells ring on the hour (the number of bongs reflects the hours) and half hour (just one bong) all day long from 7am until 7pm (including what I refer to as the snooze function at 7.02am!).
Our house is opposite the church. Our first morning we woke at 7 and and thought “uh-oh”. But we haven’t been bothered by them since.
It’s quite useful to know the time, for things like observing “bruits de voisinage”.
