Didn’t the soviets use that type of reactor in some of their submarine classes? Too difficult to keep running and can’t (easily) be switched off

They were first developed in the US in the 1950’s for of all things a proposed nuclear aircraft :open_mouth:. It was rightfully canned. They’ve had a chequered history because of reliability issues but the compact and simple design is popular now for SMR reactors and has been proposed for submarines and aircraft carriers.

Some of the papers I skim read through seemed to imply that impurities are the bane of these eutectic systems, so I’m a little confused how they’re supposed to eat more rubbish than they produce, unless that rubbish is highly purified?

I think the point is that they can be fed a mix of things that can be broken down into lighter, less radioactive byproducts and that these can be extracted much easier than in a conventional reactor. However, many of the proposed future designs, such as the MSRs, are sealed systems that will only be fueled with Pu/U that last 20-30 years before being shut down. It’s only at that point that the ‘soup’ of various radioactive byproducts can be reprocessed. I’m not sure that this is really that much better thn current designs.

That’s a very interesting and different design called a stellarator. The stellarator deign is supposed to be much better at confining the super hot fusion plasma … as long as it can be made to work :grin:
