AI developments

Yikes… That sounds terrifying! :exploding_head:

Childhood is precious. Screw those companies… I hope they are landed with a massive lawsuit.

I don’t like that.

I heard this on W@1. I’ve a friend with MND who uses his eyes and an iPad to communicate. He may be interested in this.

Saw this article recently where someone relied on an AI LLM in court to challenge her defeat in a recent election.

It went as well as you would expect

The fact it was a Reform candidate…

I think it’s more AS (artificial stupidity) than AI Gareth. Coupled with real stupidity (not envisioning being hit with costs) it’s a humdinger. Do the courts have an “easy payment” scheme?

Thanks for that John, made me smile.

Unfortunately, I think this term’s going to crop up increasingly frequently…

I went to an ophthalmologist today just to get a prescription for some new glasses; I came out with aa shedload of appointments for cataract removal. I was overwhelmed with paperwork for appointments for the op and pre and post op checks. I asked the administrator for a summary list for everything but found it difficult to read. I asked Chat GPT to help and was given a readable PDF file in French and English plus a file to import the appointments into my Google calendar.

Well, I was impressed!

Hope the operation(s) go well Mik.

Thanks John. I’m not worried about the op. It’s the paperwork that’s doing my head in.

Microsoft’s CEO wants us all to stop saying “AI slop”

Does he now, probably just AI slop.

I just saw this posted on Mastodon and it’s kinda stopped me in my tracks.

The chart above is taken from here…

https://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1926661#graph

As you may know, Stack Exchange is a website where programmers share information and ask for help. It’s very niche but it was by far the biggest site of its kind. I’ve used it countless times over the years (I’m very bad at programming!) as it’s a treasure trove of how to unpack error messages or how to configure tools. It was the Go To site if you were a techie and needed help with something.

The chart shows the number of questions posted to the site each month since its inception in 2008. The drop off in usage just so happens to coincide with when sites such as Google started including AI summaries in search results and when AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude.ai, GitHub Copilot, etc… became popular.

Whereas before, Google search results would lead users to sites such as Stack Exchange, nowadays they are being fed AI-generated results - often scraped from those same sites but without the user being directed to them. Traffic drops off, ad revenue tumbles, new content isn’t created, users stop visiting, etc…

Stack Exchange is just one example. I wonder whether we’re seeing the demise of forum-based sites, like we saw with BBS message boards when the internet really took off.

While forums maintain a sense of community they will continue. If they degenerate into a place to just find an answer then yes, they will fail.

I hope you’re right. What if, though, people aren’t being directed to a forum because ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini or Microsoft’s equivalent have just given them their answer in a conversation-like response, rather than giving them a link to a forum where they’d have to engage? Will they perhaps not be aware of the sense of community of a forum?

At the moment the AI search results usually include links to the source, and I follow those sometimes, but you’re correct that potential new members might not find their way.

Long, well-detailed account of how Ukraine has developed and applied AI to its war drones - great journalism and well-done Ukraine, but still scary and potentially ethically problematic.
