Alternatives to Macon-Villages

Definitely Picpoul de Pinet, it’s the best white wine on a 6-7 Euro budget. Avoid Ormarine as they tend to over sulphite it, if you can find one from Castelnaud -Le-Guers or Montagnac, they’re usually really nice.

Generally no cheaper than the Macon-Villages over here unfortunately.

I think we may have to just look for multi-buy deals on the stuff she knows and likes.

Go to Aldi Chris. They, like Lidl, do very good wine and sell a lot on special offer deals. You could work your way through those which appeal

I did read not long ago that most wine is not actually Chablis in à Chablis bottle as the amount of Chablis on sale outstrips the amount of grapes grown to make it.

I cannot verify this statement though.

I am not aware of that.

Production varies per year, but is in the range of 35-40 million bottles from 5866 hectares. There is in addition over production which is not classified, there is some, along side declared Chablis in the cellar at 7€ a bottle. One of the reasons that Burgundy has maintained and increased in price is that volumes are controlled.

I struggle to understand:

Try Pays d’Oc Chardonnay aged in steel casks not oak ones.

I’m not a dry white fan particularly, but I have enjoyed a Verdicchio on occasion, if SWVMBTIA isn’t set on a French wine. Usually in the £7-£8 region.

I might have missed it but Pinot Gris from Alsace. Harder to get in France, I expect, but Rueda wines are usually good.

Go on, someone say Liebfraumilch

We had some great German wines when we lived in eastern France, but hard to find here in cider land.

Years ago served in Berni steak houses, to really impress your date you needed Mateus Rose

Some noodling overnight.

I cannot find any evidence to support your statement, however the intent of the article may have been to say that the area covered by the AOC of Chablis is much greater than the area of the commune of Chablis

Similar reporting for pinot grigio, most is blended with other grapes/wines to increase the availability?

But I have not found evidence of blending and personally I know 3 producers.

Why would “over production” be sold as just general Burgundy and not declared as Chablis?

Do you really believe that? Most wine is not actually Chablis though labelled as?

The appellation controls are so strict nowadays that they check this sort of thing so rigorously. Annual Chablis yields and number of bottles for sale match.

About ten years ago my friends at the Buxy wine cooperative were facing a circa10 million euro fine for over producing and not declaring the relevant tax. Luckily it was thrown out of court.

Over producing wine can mean the loss of the appellation controllee certification, then you are buggered as a producer.

It is true that many years ago the idiots in the USA labelled mass produced wine as Chablis as they had no comprehension of what was what. Later the practice was banned but still exists to a much lesser degree. The same happens with American sparking wine, they called it Champage, since 2006 this was banned but producers that had called their products champagne prior to 2006 are still allowed to label as champagne only to be sold domestically.

To control quality. Otherwise we could simply water down the original product

That allegedly goes on, no capsule and no label; or bottles destined for overseas markets (no duty) being sold locally. Over production can be declassified and sold as a general white Burgundy.

I badly worded my post. I meant to say that over production is sold as general white burgundy when over the assinged yield for the parcel, or the grapes are just left of the vines.

My parents were virtually teetotal - a bottle of sherry would be opened for one Christmas and continued the next.

Later in life, they did, however, very occasionally buy a bottle of wine that would last over more than one meal.

My father loved languages and was thrilled when he found Liebfraumilch, because he so enjoyed saying the word. His favourite though was saying Gewürztraminer.
