Amazon, a necessary evil?

Perhaps I automatically screen out non ‘supplied by’ Amazon vendors through wanting prime postage, so maybe that’s why my experience is better.

Yeah, that sort of thing quite common on Amazon, and a blatant attempt to deceive. I’ve seen the same with printer ink shown in the original packaging and with the printer manufacturers name on them, but which are actually 3rd party ink.

Don’t they have customer reviews of the independent sellers, or am I mixing it up with somewhere else?

Somewhat independent reviews.

If they have I’ve never noticed it. Had there been one it would have been blue with my comments over that Spanish bastard and my lousy computer.

Yes ok I get your point, but if there aren’t any or very few I wouldn’t order from there.

Of course that might be because I, and others like me perhaps, now refuse to leave honest and detailed assessments because frequently they ‘fall outside the rules’, without detailing why.

As regards reading them myself, I always look for the worst before making up my mind, not so much the best.

So do I

I must admit Amazon occasionally does come up with a decent bargain. Though Amazon.de might be a better place to look

I’m been mulling the idea of getting a new phone (the current one is 3½ years old and getting a bit slow) since the summer. Finally decided a Moto Edge 40 Pro was about the right price/features - camera could be a bit better but is OK and it supports 5G (not that I have a 5G signal locally unless I go into town :rage:) and wireless charging.

I’d seen it around the £600 mark so hoping to snag a Black Friday deal, I waited then was rather annoyed to discover they were out of stock almost everywhere - I have a nagging feeling Motorola are phasing it out which is a bit ridiculous as it was only launched in April, probably usurped by the Edge+(2023) launched in May, though I can’t find that on sale at all in the UK.

Amazon.fr no more use but Amazon.de had a couple left fully £200 below the Amazon UK price.

Bargain

It’s worth looking for patterns. A big solid wodge of 1* ratings - say >5% - the product product likely has some serious issues.

I tend to read the 2 & 3* ratings, because they often reveal the foibles better than the “I was too stupid to know how to turn it on” types that often turn up with at the lowest rating.

Less than 50 reviews, it’s not really enough to know what the truth will likely be.

Completely agree.

I would advocate reading as many review as you can manage across all categories - 1* reviews might be about the product but they might be about the delivery experience, which is not always the fault of the vendor and tells you little about the product either way.

Certainly 5* reviews have a habit of being less useful than a well written 3 or 4 star review .

Yes but that is why it is necessary to read them to iron out all such useless information.

Quite agree (as I said).

Happy to report that, after complaining to Amazon customer services, I did finally receive a postage paid label to return the unwanted ‘copy’ raser head, so hats off to Amazon customer services. :+1:

I order from Amazon quite often, when exactly what I want is not available in shops I can reach. I mainly use Amazon.fr Prime with several items costing less than €10 and no delivery fee. I also use Amazon.de and happily pay delivery from Germany.

Today, I made an interesting discovery.

Something I had in the Cart on Amazon.fr for €40.28I subsequently found on Amazon.co.uk for £19.40 + £4.33 delivery. I entered my France membership number and password, added to Cart and it offered in Euros amounting to €28.25. Buy!

I have no idea why the Amazon.fr price was so much higher. Both sold by Amazon, not independent sellers. Speed of delivery is not usually an issue for me, an ‘advantage’ of Prime, but I am still surprised by the price difference.

The message here to all, is check multiple country sites before buying! :grinning:

If the order is being shipped from the UK will you have to pay customs charges before the delivery company will hand it over at your doorstep?
Perhaps the answer is wait and see.

Often the case. I always check .fr, .co.uk and .de and on occasion .com. For example, those essential items for a happy existence, floaty things for the pool, are much better quality and cheaper on the US.

If all handled by Amazon probably not, I didn’t have to pay anything extra for the phone going the other way. However, as you say, wait and see.

I ordered a phone charger from Amazon a couple of days ago after reading Bonzocat and Notalot’s posts on the subject. It was supposed to come yesterday but didn’t. However it did come today. I wasn’t in a hurry. It’s busy charging my phone already. I’ve generally had no problems with Amazon.
