Well, it is the experience with “assisted dying” in Canada, Australia etc.
Perhaps it’s because those with power always want more.
As people get older, they often develop a fear of “being a burden”. It seems also to be the case for people with incurable conditions. Maybe that’s the result of the way many societies in the West place too much value on youth and health.
That’s not what I’m saying. I think (it’s not an unusual belief) that dignity is a human quality, and to suggest (by using the phrase “dying with dignity”) that people are demeaned by suffering is what is “warped”. (I’m not suggesting you’re warped!)
I’m glad you’re not as I’ve not suggested that people are demeaned by suffering, merely that it’s not, in itself, a sign of dignity as some seem to suggest. People should have the freedom to decide when they’ve suffered enough, with appropriate safeguards of which a blanket pregnancy test should not be one.
A really interesting read and certainly the move should be back towards Europe and independence totally free from US influence especially regarding defence. Stop buying American weapons and aircraft as Europe as a whole is well capable of developing and providing all that is necessary. NATO can continue in it’s present form should the US decide to stay in, if not then a European organisation should be formed.
Also one single country should no longer have a veto vote in the EU where rogue, Putin affiliates such as Hungary can block all the others. Domestically First Past the Post has to go and France’s system of run offs would be interesting to say the least.
Wouldn’t it be funny if post Putin, Russia transformed itself into an acceptable ally, suitable to join NATO, while the US voted in Trump or Vance and became even more unreliable.
That’s rather rich, I’m certainly not superstitious, nor particularly fashionable in my beliefs. OTOH, I’ve studied the factual history and cultural evolution of Christianity sufficiently to be aware of its historically flimsy and speculatively superstitious foundations.
I didn’t know anyone still claimed that sort of thing. Given the amount of evidence for the central tenets of the faith - Jesus lived, was crucified and was resurrected - it’s quite an unusual claim nowadays. (The usual comparison historians make is the documentary evidence for the existence of Christ versus Julius Caesar.)
Re: PP, I use anchovies a lot, so am not really bothered by its disappearance. However, I see Simpsons are recreating the recipe - my brother was a commis there in the Eighties and says it was the least hygenic kitchen he’s known (and he’s run a resto in China).
“Well, it looks like there’s been a recent Crusaders’revival and three sets of Abrahamaic fundamentalists are currently f-----g up the world for everyone else.”
Had a similar debate the other day. The comparison with the Crusades is apt, given that was politics and self-interest under a pretence of faith.
Not necessarily! And it depends on what you mean by “political”. I’m sure you’re not suggesting any group of people should be barred from comment just because you believe different things to them
If you are, though, you’d probably be happy in Doug Wilson’s church.
No, what I’m saying is that they’re just as much up to political shenanigans as anyone that would traditionally be described as a politician, and not necessarily in the interests of their flock.
