A serious heavyweight Labour politician,…ex chief-Secretary of the Treasury (that word again!) under Gordon Brown, etc, etc. Failed in his bid to be leader of Labour party in 2015 against Corbyn…the UK world might be a different place had he won….

The secretaire de mairie isn’t the maire’s secretary but the commune’s secretary - maires come and go, the secretaire de mairie is there until retirement if that is what he or she wants, because it is a civil service job and not in the gift of any individual maire or town council.
The S de M are part of the fonction publique territoriale, they aren’t just some crony of a maire. Unlike fonctionnaires d’état they stay in one place or move within a département or région, they can’t be sent off just anywhere in France.
We do speak basic French and at times cannot always understand due to people speaking to fast, because our French is not fluent we at east try and should not be put down.
