Are you doing the laundry too often?

We’ve just bought a new washing machine to replace a broken Beko which i never liked.
Whilst researching to find the best buy I noted that the cycles seem longer than ever.
I investigated further and apparently to clean successfully at lower temperatures and rinse with less water consumption the machine has to agitate the clothes for longer.
This is surely the reason for accelerated wear on our clothing. Perhaps greater use of the rapid wash may be an idea for lightly soiled clothing.

Same as the EU interference in vacuum cleaners and hair dryers, you need to use them for longer to achieve the same results.

Down to the river everyone… soak the laundry, rub the cloth where dirt shows, rinse, then spread the laundry on the bushes/ground to dry in the sunshine.

Seems that is what locals did way back when … in the mists of time. In fact within living memory (we have some really “golden oldies” in our commune).

:relaxed::relaxed::relaxed:

That’s interesting John, never heard that. What have EU done to vc and hdriers??

I need little excuse to leave the vc in the cupboard :rofl::rofl:

“Down to the river everybody…”@Stella :hugs:

Interestingly, tomorrow, our little commune of 3,000 souls is opening a brand sparkling new 7/7 07h00-21h00 laundromat in la rue de la Libération (the main shopping drag), so Sourdeval sets to be the hygiene Mecca of la Manche into the 2050s.

There is an underground stream of spring water that supplies the hyper-intelligent machines, and no doubt an eco-friendly power source too, no niffy or mucky slouches in this neck of the Normandy woods!

Lowered the wattage, some gains in efficiency as manufacturers can’t be lazy and just rely on powerful motors so must make improvements.
Same as me on swimming pools, 90% saving on electricity over STD.

So glad I am saving electricity, even on the very rare occasion that the hoover finds its way out of the cupboard. :relaxed::joy:

We brought our excellent German Sebo vacuum over from the uk. Manufactured before the new rules and essential for our dog’s long haired shedding.

They always get good reports, I just bought a shark with the dual brush, the brush on the front picks up very well compared to the snow plough effect of others Inc Dyson.

I have a set of hard rubber balls from our local eco shop that I throw in the washing machine. They mean I can use less washing product as they agitate the clothes more - a modern equivalent of bashing clothes against rocks. Perhaps they also wear out clothes more quickly, but since I don’t hava nay clothes that are at all delicate I’m not too fussed.

And the only reason I’ve ever put clothes in the freezer is to kill clothes moths.:rage:

A friend told me that one of her work colleagues when realising her daughter had stepped in dog dirt had wrapped the wellington boot in a plastic bag and popped it in the freezer to harden to make it easier to remove the poop. Made me feel very queasy!
One of those so called good ideas that I would never use.

What Is wrong woth a hose?

The modern equivalent of the lavoir?

Exactly.

You particularly mentioned starred restaurants, which have a high reputation to maintain.
I cannot say that the same applies to all food outlets, but the main worries are cross contamination, poor storage of food and poor personal hygiene.

I never do any laundry in my house. Serves me right for failing to measure the height of the kitchen counter before renting the place, which was renovated by an architect. The plumbing and electrics are in place but the counter is about 3cm too low to accommodate any known washing machine. Luckily, there’s a splendid outdoor Laverie Revolution laundrette in the village and I’m quite happy using it until I find a better solution. It will even text you when the wash cycle is almost finished. Probably not much fun in mid-winter, though.

I have the water results for one restaurant, found ecoli and coliforms back in 2018, the solution…

Stop testing! I kid you not. Testing will resume by the end of the month.

Oh well Al,
You can always ask the landlord to raise the worktop, & good luck, or just do yourself with LL promission.
Just another conformation on architects. Good at drafting basic plans & presentation to the dubious client, but most I’ve encountered have no idea on how to draft & integrate technical systems or how they work, less they work with specialised engineers.

Indeed, Warren. I’m thinking of buying the house but want to spend a few more months here before making the decision. If I do buy it, I’ll completely rejig the kitchen and would rather not tinker with the counters in the meantime. May change my mind come winter if I’m still renting it then!

Might be an idea to continue renting through the Winter, just to be sure that the house etc really does suit you, even in bad weather. Just a thought.
