Yeah, I understand that but you mentioned on your phone and, in the car, I never use it on the phone screen which is what I assume you mean. I always use it via android auto on the car’s screen and haven’t found a way to display actual speed.
Ah, I see. Can’t speak for Android Auto. I’d be surprised if you couldn’t do it if Google maps does it … or maybe not ![]()
Sometimes Google maps shows your actual speed, sometimes not. I’ve never worked out if there is a pattern.
I think it’s where you have plotted your route rather than just driving casually around.
I use CarPlay and using that when navigating with google maps, it shows the vehicle speed - also when using without CarPlay.
There’s a setting in the Navigation part of the App to set “Show speed limits” and just below that is a setting “Show speedometer”. I use Apple so not sure if it’s the same in Android.
I’ve just checked and that’s turned on but it doesn’t show on the android auto screen. A quirk of Android I guess
It shows on mine but only when a route is planned. That’s an android tablet on the dashboard. I think on my phone it may show if I just click on maps. Problem is I use different apps for mapping so it’s all a blur
I’ve lost the plot. are we trying to show current speed of vehicle or of other traffic?
Current vehicle speed
Aha… I’ve a little gadget which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket, cable is long enough for the gadget to sit on the dashboard… and it tells me just how fast my car is travelling using GPS
this little gadget is worth its weight in gold as the classic-car speedo is not working and I’m trying to get it mended but it’s about a million years old (ok slight exag
).
I have similar just for France normally but mine has a heads up display onto the windscreen just by the crit air sticker on the lower right side.
Good work - a correctly placed Crit’Air sticker is a thing of beauty. ![]()
Just for clarity for those who may not be currently using such things, CarPlay is the system that connects your phone to a car display (whether built-in or third-party) - but it’s the apps on your phone (or within your car’s “infotainment system”) that do the actual work of navigating.
So as you rightly said, Google maps will show your current speed while navigating whether it’s connected to a CarPlay device or just being used on your phone, in a dashboard mount.
