Why would you do that if you’re moving to France? It has no tax benefit for you.
Really? The oil crisis, inflation running at 20%, rampant sexism, racism and homophobia. Sure there was great music but not much else.
Jaysus.
Year or Two off moving!
Only for the chosen few.
And we have Trump, Farage, Musk, AI, populism, climate change, wars and so much more now - and that’s without thinking.
I think Uni’s still cheap in France isn’t it?
… … … and the rates ~5% in the UK!
Nope. Can go up to €25k. To become a doctor can cost €200,000.
Glad you are enjoying SF ![]()

Depends. Cost my daughter €0 (PhD, she’s a genetics engineer not a medical Dr).
Why am I not surprised. ![]()
I did say “can go up to”
That’s an interesting observation. I wonder if the Jane of today, moving country now would take such an enviably relaxed attitude as the Jane then ?! I’d love to have had any excuse for ignoring my finances when weighing up coming to France. Calculations of likely savings/outgoings/pension lump sums were crucial in proving to me (and even more importantly to my long suffering wife!) that I could give up a well paid career, move to France, and that we could afford to live off our savings for 8 years, with almost literally no income until my pension kicked in.
I don’t think it would be much different. Both of us are completely useless with money and don’t manage it well, but are also quite frugal. So we know we can manage no matter what and don’t plan. I plan more now only because of my preference for my money to go to charities not that tax man when I die.
It really didn’t seem that big a deal to move to France. We lived in the centre of London and just wanted to live in the countryside.
You like to discuss it though.
Some of make decisions that are not based purely on financial outcomes. I moved a fair chunk of savings to my French bank because I wanted them to see me as a genuine customer not some flybynight who kept the minimum with them. I’ve also never considered buying a U.K. house as a second property just because it would grow in value. My brain has never been influenced like that although I know plenty of others who are. You might think I am a fool but at least I’m a fool who is true to his own beliefs.
Thanks and Nice to meet you!
All of the questions actually arise from other threads - have been back and covered all threads from Jan 2023 and would love to post in the correct thread but read them a bit too quickly to remember where the ideas arose.
Just tried to remember everything that’s been written but a few of the posts here are quite heavy.
George1’s 54 response 7.5% tax lump sum transfer thread to go through ft. Larkwood - it’s a little heavier than usual but the information contained is priceless!
As no doubt you know - you’ve described my situation perfectly, but I’m State Pensionable at 67 not 65, so a minor difference.
To give up a paid job and live on savings till State Pension … …
Just discovered that I won’t be able to work in France (on one of the threads here) as will lose S1 … … and so working out how to air drop back into the UK for 6 month periods and work someplace like Aldi. Talked to the cashier and looks like it’s easy to get a job there.
