Just tried with the French SIM in the phone - wanted me to sign in but otherwise OK, so I assume the one month thing will be that sort of case, people going abroad and using WiFi which will get them a “foreign” IP address.
They probably have the system set up to record whether you are using a non UK IP address and if you do continuously for more than a month decline the service.
I’d go for a fresh reinstall of everything and try via the VPN again.
Alternatively do you have a UK SIM available with a reasonable amount of data allowance that you can use?
Oh, if using a UK SIM disable WiFi on the phone, if you don’t you will pick up a French IP address unless using a VPN.
I am OK at the moment thanks BB. It works perfectly in the car with Android Auto and on my phone I have a file of BBC.com shortcuts for most listened to stations. I am just wondering what the BBC have achieved with these changes which must have cost a bit to implement.
For the end user not much - nothing positive anyway.
But deals to buy/distribute content usually come with geographic restrictions (because content owners want to sell it separately in other areas) and the BBC will need to be seen to take measures to restrict its audience to the UK - that would be my guess anyway.
So they’ve finally gone and done it. As of yesterday BBC Sounds no longer works on either my laptop or smartphone due to me being outside the UK. The replacement is highly inferior as you can only listen to live radio, no replay. I’m interested in subscribing to Nord VPN in order to be able to access BBC Sounds - anyone have positive / negative experience of using Nord for this? Would very much like to hear, thanks!
You can get a 30 day free trial to see how well it works for you. I’ve had no real issues with NordVPN, but I do have to switch servers occasionally which is very easy.
I’m totally confused. BBC Sounds no longer works through my iPhone at home so I use Tunein or my Podcasts App. In the car the same phone allows me to use BBC Sounds via CarPlay. How does that work?
I think they turned out to be in Panama….impossible to pursue. Suddenly they ran out of servers that couldn’t defeat Auntie, couldn’t fix it, and lied and prevaricated it was a nightmare for months.
NordVPN works for me but some home automation apps on my iPhone don’t like VPNs, so I have to switch it on for the car and switch it off to check, for example, the pool (Ondilo). Otherwise iPlayer on Macbook or iMac work fine, as @hairbear says you have to change servers every now and then. I’m in the IoM currently I also use it on a Firestick and I’m about to experiment with loading it on the Deco (TP-Link) routers I installed earlier this year.
Sorry, I should have mentioned never pay list price. You can get a three year deal for the price of a one year list price subscription if you talk to them.
The only way I can get radio 4 now is on the app BBC.com. I have it on my phone and iPad but cannot get it on the App Store on my husbands phone and iPad. No prob downloading it on mine. Don’t understand that. Obvs the Sounds app was much better but that has definitely gone now. I don’t understand the VSPN stuff totally but am quite happy with the new app
