Bonne Fête tout le monde

I don’t understand you use of the word “defile” here. Can you please explain.

just an accent missed out… that’s all… the word is French "défilé " and translates as “parade”

Many folk don’t remember to use the accents/whatever (including me) and many have keyboards which are not easy either way…

and many of us use French and English words… intertwined… for me, it’s often because I can no longer remember the English word (my age… )

it’s a procession, can be other types of procession, but here means a parade.

It literally means a line one after the other, or a series one after the other. The root of it being “fil” = a line or a thread. So dé in front to give the sense of it (the thread or series) unwinding or coming one after the other in a line ie a procession. é on the end makes it a kind of past tense noun so the line went one after the other. ie a procession or parade. The people in the parade are doing what is known as défiler ie filing (English usage) past.

We had fireworks preceded by a “retraite aux flambeaux” (subdued lynch-mob style, there were children present !) through the village, led by “Folklore Issoirien” a trad music and dance group. That was a first for us in this village, as it has tended not to do very much at all in previous years. Fortunately, the day had cooled significantly as the evening went on, so much so that people had jackets on again by the time the fireworks started - typical Auvergne. One day scalding hot, the next, freezing one’s proverbials off.

Well, I watched/listened to the Concert today…
Yes, I can agree that (to me) it wasn’t as good as the previous one… but that’s just down to my personal taste…

The music had an international flavour… but with a good number of French composers.

I’d totally forgotten that it was Michel Legrand who’d composed Windmills of your Mind… which I remember Noël Harrison singing in The Thomas Crown Affair… all those years ago.

Anyway… we all have our favourite musical bits and it must be nigh impossible to please everyone… all the time.

The crowd enjoyed themselves and the setting, the fireworks, the whole kit and kaboodle… was great.

roll on 2024…

Guilty as charged. In my defence, I was using my phone which seems to do as it pleases in terms of autocorrect, accents, etc…
