Le Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine by Alexandre Dumas. If anyone can get hold of a copy, it has the most amazing stories & recipes.
I have only had a chance to browse the book owned by a friend, but maybe one day I can get my hands on my own .

Thank you Stevie, I have even found a soft cover version online. Shall get my copy to add to my cookery book collection.
