Britain at its best… and nostalgia corner 🙂

Nooooooooooo, not the golden syrup, not for me. I’m a savoury, salty sort of chap, not sweet at all.

And to think I once considered you had excellent taste! Dried fruit and farinaceous products were made for each other.

They are allowed to be in a rock cake (I don’t like rock cakes) no no a scone must be unweighted-down by such things as dried fruit (which is lovely just not in things. Some people recklessly put raisins in bread and butter pudding: well just no, unthinkable).

Just try a bit of salted butter with a dribble of golden syrup on it, on eg a Scottish pancake. You’ll thank me later

Clearly you have never tried golden sultanas
(sometimes called blond sultanas) in scones.

Regardless of what you top it with is Scone pronounced ‘Scon’ or Scrown’ ?

Rhymes with stone.
Mascarpone with a good strawberry jam on top gets my vote. :yum:

Exactly right :crossed_fingers:

We’ll, no. Nothing will make bread and butter pudding acceptable.

For me scone rhymes with gone and on.
But if it is Scone Palace it rhymes with moon and June.

And in Scone Palace there are no doubt wall sconces. Which to me match the pronunciation of scone…

As a Cornishman brought up in Devon - who cares? Just pile it on and keep the address of the nearest cardiac clinic close to hand

The sign of British people having fully integrated into French life, a thread that morphs into one about food and eating :joy:

Hello Sue,
Your list is absolutely brilliant and I have only just discovered it a bit belatedly. It brought back memories of a time when I yearned to be in England.

We left France in January 2017 and then binged on most of the things in your list. The three things I would suggest adding are seaside fish and chips, live music in general and the huge number of activities hosted by the U3a. Most importantly you have to live in easy reach of London to get the best of Britain.

Unfortunately things change in an unpredictable way. There is nothing better than to find a great pub like the Tiger here in East Dean, near the Birling Gap not far from Eastbourne after an amble over the downs but these days I cannot drink beer for health reasons. The great institution, fish and chips, I find indigestible these days. I avoid going to too many concerts because I fear for my hearing. And there’s nothing more uncomfortable than sitting on the grass watching those outdoor events

Charming. A nice pint of warm ale, washed down with another nice pint of warm ale :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Fuller’s ESB preferably.

Thanks Ken, love your photo - and I quite agree re the additions to the list.

You have to live in easy reach of London, really.??? The further away the better in my book

I might add that we also visited the UK from France and we also did some bingeing then :slightly_smiling_face:

What a coincidence! That was my favourite beer too.

Maybe Buzz,
But there were at least six points in Sue’s list that you only get in London.
